Job Description

A temporary full time (1.0) Indigenous Counsellor is required by School District No. 60 (Peace River North) effective September 1, 2022 to June 30, 2023. The assignment will be at the Indigenous Education Centre.Qualifications and ExperienceThe ideal candidate will have:

• Masters degree in counseling psychology or a related field from an institution recognized by the BC College of Teachers, with training in school counseling theory/techniques (or working towards) with an emphasis on Indigenous social issues
• Excellent skills in individual as well as group/classroom instruction on: anger management, suicide, relationships and other relevant topics
• Knowledge/experience in working with critical incident responses, safety plans, crisis prevention, emergency plans, risk and threat assessment
• Interest and willingness to co-ordinate student leadership programs
• Knowledge and familiarity of Indigenous culture and history will be considered an asset
• Knowledge of trauma-informed practices
• Counselor will have a broad based knowledge of the family and social issues that Indigenous students face today, including the generational impacts of the residential school system on their families and communities, and a good understanding and practice of Indigenous Cultures and traditions.
• As a member of the staff team of the Indigenous Education Centre, the counsellor will actively engage in events, other related school and community work
• Counsellor will utilize Indigenous traditions, healing practices, customs, protocols and provide support and counselling for Indigenous students and their families
• Ability to help students navigate the unique educational, social and behavioral obstacles related to students attending middle and secondary school
• Strong communication skills that incorporates technology
• Skills/ability to lead workshop sessions for students on a variety of different skills (i.e. Anger Management, Suicide Awareness, and Strength-based Approaches)
• Ability/experience in behaviour support and intervention(Functional Analysis of Behaviour, Behaviour Intervention Planning)
• Ability to work with teachers, students and/or parents in a problem solving capacity
• Working knowledge of ethical procedures and guidelines
• Ability/experience to contact and liaise with outside agencies
• Must possess a Valid Class 5 Drivers license, provide clean driving abstract and a reliable vehicle
• Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate

Compensation

• $2000 relocation allowance for teacher from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $4000 for teachers from other areas
• $2,674 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE)
• Salary as per collective agreement. Current salary grid is $54,410 - $97,815
• Benefits as per collective agreement with option to enroll in medical, dental, extended health, and group life insurance. Benefits are employer paid based on FTE
