Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and LabourLIBRARY ASSISTANT (ASL3)Open CompetitionFrederictonWHO WE ARE:The Dre Marguerite Michaud Library is one of 63 public libraries that make up the New BrunswickPublic Library Service. As a joint public-school facility located in a francophone community centre, thelibrary serves the public as well as the students and personnel of École Sainte-Anne and École desBâtisseurs. The library aims to be a place where people of all ages and backgrounds can gather while theypursue their educational, social, and recreational needs.THE POSITION:As the Library Assistant, you will actively participate in the planning, coordination and delivery ofprograms and services for children and adults; assist in promoting the library and its services; maintainpositive relations with the community; oversee the day to day offering of circulation services; act as aresource person and trainer for the automated library system; provide reader’s advisory and intermediatelevel reference service using traditional and electronic resources; orient and assist patrons in the use ofinformation technology and information literacy; assist in delegating tasks and in assessing the work ofvolunteers, summer students and employment program personnel; ensure the day to day maintenance ofthe library facility; oversee the collection of library statistics; participate in committees; and assist withother library functions as required. You will also assist in the maintenance of collections by suggestingmaterials for purchase, shelving materials, and conducting shelf reading.Working with us will require daytime, evening, and weekend shifts (based on work schedules). Librarywork will involve lifting. You will report to the Library Director.TO BE SUCCESSFUL:We are looking for people with diverse backgrounds that bring a combination of the following:

  • Technical competencies: Ability to use Office Technology, Software and Applications;
Presentation Skills; Written Communication
  • Language: Written and spoken competence in English and French is required.
  • Education: A high school diploma supplemented by one (1) year of post-secondary
courses/training and three (3) years experience working with the public including one year ofrelevant experience delivering programs or services; OR completion of a formallibrary/information study program and two (2) years experience working with the public. Anequivalent combination of training and experience may be considered.Experience using email, the Internet and MS-Word is necessary.Please ensure that your preferred language for assessment (English or French) is identified on yourresume.
