In Mississauga, you’ll find Vale’s Base Metals Technology Development team; a group of highly trained engineers and scientists working to improve Vale’s competitive edge and support its growth strategies by coming up with safer and more environmentally responsible technology.The OpportunityWe are currently seeking a Manager, Long Term Planning, Geology, Ventilation, & Geotech – NA to join our Technology and Engineering team in Sudbury. This is a permanent position.The Manager of Long Term Planning, Geology, and Geotech is accountable to lead a cross functional team that has a primary role to produce the long term mining and Strategic Life of Mine Plans (LoMP and Y+5) aligned with the guidelines defined in the Master Plan. This team will cover all key disciplines necessary to deliver the LoMP including underground infrastructure, stope geometry, ore extraction schedule, ventilation systems, infrastructure, geomechanical and hydrogeological execution, and the elaboration of the integrated long-term and in-mine / near mine / extensions drilling plan, guaranteeing a robust and sustainable portfolio of the mineral resources and reserves.

  • For Geology, main areas of responsibility will include the key geology processes, including in-mine / near mine / extensions drilling and its related drilling strategy, geological modelling, resource estimation and reporting, aiming to increase geological predictability, determining QAQC programs, ensuring the accuracy of the integrated resource models.
  • For Planning and Engineering, main areas of responsibilty will be ensuring the optimization and correct management of mineral reserves through production plans and cut-off application, mine sequencing and developmentplanning and designing key infrasctrucure (ventilation, electrical, backfill & services) aspects and the disposal of waste in mines, as well as technical and economic feasibility studies for the mines, including its equipment selection and sizing.
  • For Geotech (Geomechanics and Hydrogeology / Hydrology), main areas of responsibility include the development of studies and projects in the discipline of Geotechnical (rock engineering) and hydrogeology / Hydrology and elaboration of underground and open pit geomechanical models and projects
Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership role within North Atlantic that ensures problems are prioritized appropriately, and that the strategy to accomplish relevancy of Base Metals is continuously updated
  • Manage risks related to your area (identify, analyse, assess, treat, and monitor your risks directly, maintain effective controls and implement measures to reduce the probability of occurrence and impacts of risks). Communicate transparently the status of your risks to senior management
  • Be a model in cultural transformation, having safe doing as the only acceptable way to carry out your work and in Long-Term Mining Technical Services.
  • Assemble and maintain a motivated and high-performance team, being a key focal point between technical areas and mining complexes.
  • Develop and implement VPS Practices.
Geology
  • Develop and manage central standards (drilling methods and strategy, sampling, QAQC, Resource Estimation and Categorization, and Database (GED, MRM) Management, etc.).
  • Database and QAQC Management for Geology and drilling. Ensure sample integrity for accurate geological analysis and interpretation. Describe and interpret data from drill cores. Manage samples preparation and assays.
  • Coordinate Long-term exploration (drilling) strategy, planning, budget and execution. Determine in-mine / near mine / extension and long-term drilling plan, design, and management and associated QAQC. Define drilling acquisition plan. Monitor the execution of drilling with defined suppliers. Integrate the drilling program with geotechnical drilling. Coordinate specialized surveys, techniques, studies and innovation (e.g. geophysics, geochemistry).
  • Consolidate geological assumptions. Consolidate drilling program and licensing. Collect and integrate short-term drilling demand with Local Geology.
  • Perform long term geological interpretation, mineral resource estimation, geostatistics simulations, and Life of Mine block modelling.
  • Develop Mineral Resources Categorization methodology and application. Regional MRMR Operations Reporting.
  • Create, monitor and execute on required ore metallurgical plan and testing.
  • Create an efficient process for optimizing block modelling to provide mine design team with quality information.
  • Geological Operational Qualified Person for sign-off and management of the MRMR system to adhere to legal requirements.
  • Develops the strategic exploration plan within all NA mines to optimize and prioritize drilling resources that ensure mine resources and reserves are identified for feeding into the LOMP.
  • Develop and recruit, where appropriate, modelling expertise, structural analysis capability, use of geological tools and associated analytical systems to ensure quality and reliable information.
  • Research, test, and recommendation of new products and technologies to improve/reduce cost/increase safety of exploration techniques.
  • Audit compliance of systems such as reconciliations, dilution and recovery, drill hole inventory, safety.
Mine Planning & Engineering / Infrastructure (ventilation, electrical, backfilling & services)
  • Analyze and validate the assumptions for the preparation of the reserve model and final pits / UG Designs. Apply reserve-modifying factors in mineral resource models.
  • Design of future expansions of Brownfields mines <$30M project capital. Generate sequencing, cut-off scenarios. Study and support on alternative mining methods and options.
  • Application of tonnes/grades scenarios to capex/opex trade-off for mines and mine projects – Cut off integration with finance drivers, process recoveries and costing and the time value consideration
  • Validate assumptions that will serve as the basis for LoMP/Y+5 Plans.
  • Operationalize and validate the operationalization of the LOM/Y+5 plan (Pit, UG, and piles). Generate mine indicators/KPDs (Plan LOM/Y+5 - Master Plan).
  • Update brownfield mine plans, integrate FEL projects and consolidate LOMP and Disclose the Y+5 Plan and Master Plan including the Interference and milestones
  • Fleet sizing and mining equipment scenarios simulations / scenarios.
  • Monitor mining equipment acquisition, replacement or improvement of mining equipment and calculate the mining sustaining.
  • Integrate ventilation management strategy and actions with operating mines and Mine Design and Enterprise Optimization group
  • Accountable for the ventilation system plan and design for each operating mine
  • Authority to instruct mining operations to modify systems components
  • Accountable for the technical design and operating standards for all underground mine ventilation systems in North Atlantic underground mines to deliver fresh air volume and legislated air quality as per legislation.
  • Responsible to Audit the operating compliance to ventilation standards
  • Responsible for air flow simulation modelling and quality in the underground environment as impacted by future state design and sequences of ore extraction plans.
  • Ensure capability of all direct report engineering staff meets the minimum expected performance level for Vale across all North Atlantic mines. Coach, mentor, develop and to the extent necessary create performance improvement plans and/or exit strategies for underperforming teams.
  • Recommend ventilation system designs for FEL studies for all future underground mine project developments.
  • Plan and design mining infrastructure (electrical, backfill, services, refuge stations etc.) requirements.
  • Ventilation and backfilling equipment sizing and sustaining capital and opex calculation.
  • Generate / Calculate operating mining costs (Opex)
  • Responsible for regional Life of Mine Plans aggregation and consolidation.
  • Responsible to develop progressive closure plans in a yearly basis for open pits and waste dumps.
  • (QP) signoff for the MRMR report.
Geotechnical and Hydrogeology / Hydrology
  • Establish and modify geomechanical models and projects for pits and underground, in compliance with audits of mineral resources and reserves and environmental licensing including Open Pit and UG geotechnics, geomechanical models, and Rock Engineering studies.
  • Provide inputs in development of Life of Operations Plans and MRMR.
  • Evaluate qualitative and quantitative hydrogeological impacts of new mines and for Open Pit and Underground expansions, as well as being responsible for proposing mitigation measures and action plans. Perform Hydrogeology and Hydrology modelling / studies.
  • Assess underground water availability and levels for projects.
  • Update geotechnical database (GDMS of Geotechnics and Geotechnical Investigations).
  • Develop, evaluate and make available the evaluations of final pits and UG technical drawings geometries (Open Pit and Underground).
  • Accountable for the Life of Mine ”Mine design package.”
  • Responsible for the numerical modeling of ground stress and strain predictions in the open pits and underground environment as impacted by future state design and sequences of ore extraction plans.
  • Recommend ground control designs for sequence and ground support systems for FEL studies for all future open pit and underground mine project developments.
About You
  • 11 to 15 years of experience in a similar subject area
  • Post-secondary degree in Engineering, Economy, Business, Finance, or a related field
  • National Instrument 43-101 or JORC standards recognized and accepted professional designation of geoscientist or engineer
  • MBA is an asset
Other Knowledge and Skills:
  • Experience with operating models, process standardization is an asset
