McMaster University and Mohawk College are significant collaborators in our daily work.Position SummaryReporting to the VP Quality and Performance and Chief Nursing Executive, the Chief of Interprofessional Practice is a senior level management role focused on improving patient outcomes in collaboration with operational and medical program leadership, staff, and physicians.Chiefs are providing expertise to enhance professional practice and interprofessional team performance. Chiefs are assigned to clinical areas of HHS developing strong relationships and familiarity with their clients’ strategic goals, priorities, and capacity. Chiefs also lead and participate in corporate projects. Operational management responsibilities (e.g. patient care service) may be assigned to the role.At this time, the Chief will be assigned to cover St. Peters Hospital, West Lincoln Hospital, Community Medicine and Population Health portfolio with services across various HHS locations (e.g. Boris Clinic). These assignments are subject to change considering the overall needs of the organization and the work among the team of Chiefs of Interprofessional Practice, the Chief of Nursing Practice, and the Chief of Health Professional Practice, and the Directors of the portfolio.Key functions include:
  • Continuing advancement of professional practice through empowerment of staff, education, remediation, policy development, and research.
  • Establishing, implementing, and evaluating standards of practice.
  • Leading, supporting and monitoring practice changes.
  • Appraising and facilitating re-design of models of care, workflows, and skills mix through processes that engage teams and patients and families.
  • Facilitating optimal use of technologies used in patient care and facilitating team performance (e.g. digital health systems).
  • Supporting adoption of research evidence and best practices.
  • Contributing methods to improve team communications, performance, and resilience.
  • Managing advanced practice staff who dually report to Chiefs and clinical operations Directors.
Schedule Work HoursGenerally, Monday – Friday business hours; requires participation in the Director On-Call rosterQualifications
  • Current certificate of registration in good standing with a Regulated Health Professional College.
  • Baccalaureate degree in a health discipline with a Master’s Degree that includes health administration and leadership is required. Doctoral level preparation is preferred. Thesis work aligned to the features of this role is preferred.
  • Current experience in professional and team leadership, and at least 5 years management experience with progressive leadership responsibilities.
  • Thorough understanding of nursing and other health professional work and associated regulatory requirements in Ontario.
  • Knowledge and experience with chronic disease care, rehabilitation care, population health, patient safety, patient empowerment and activation models.
  • Demonstrated excellence in written and oral communications, critical thinking, analytics, facilitation and consultation, team building skills including a focus on team cultures enabling patient safety.
  • Education and experience applying lean quality improvement tools and techniques is required.
  • A proven record of building relationships with members of health professional teams, including physicians, healthcare leaders, and external stakeholders (e.g. government, vendors, researchers).
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and facilitate change through influence, and to navigate highly political issues.
  • Evidence of knowledge and experiences with transformative care approaches that create greater value to patients (increase quality and reduce costs).
  • Experience with patient and family engagement in service re-design work.
  • Evidence of successful past experiences leading project teams where deliverables created sustainable improvement impacts.
  • Demonstrated personal commitment to mindfulness practice is preferred.
  • Education in cultural safety, anti-racism, and ethics is also preferred.
