Schedule 35 hours per weekEducation Level Masters DegreeCareer Level Level I, II or IIIJob DescriptionMcMaster University Library is seeking a knowledgeable and collaborative librarian to join the Distinctive Collections Division.The Distinctive Collections Cataloguing Librarian will assist the Library’s Distinctive Collections Division in addressing a backlog of uncatalogued rare and unique materials, largely held by the William Ready Division of Archives and Research Collections. The incumbent will apply recognized standards and local practices to add or create appropriate and complete records (bibliographic, holdings, items, etc.) that describe and support the ongoing discovery, access, and management of these resources. The incumbent will ensure that these materials are included in the shared catalogue and discovery platforms of the OCUL Collaborative Futures program of which McMaster is a member, OCLC’s WorldCat database, and will support delivery of data to other shared databases (e.g., ESTC) that facilitate discovery by a global scholarly community. They will also participate as requested in other Ready Division activities including providing reference service in the Division and assisting with outreach or teaching activities.The successful candidate will:

  • Catalogue items in a variety of formats and languages held in Distinctive Collections, applying recognized standards such as MARC21, RDA/AACR2/DCRM, and LCSH. Correct, edit, modify, or upgrade existing bibliographic or other records in the library catalogue and/or from external sources as needed to accurately represent items in the Division’s collections. Create original bibliographic and other records as necessary. Apply local or standardized (e.g., Library of Congress) classification and call number schemes as appropriate, based on the Division’s practices.
  • Ensure that materials in Distinctive Collections’ holdings are accurately reflected in Omni, the Ontario Council of University Libraries’ shared catalogue, of which McMaster is a member. Ensure that holdings are reflected in OCLC’s WorldCat database. Support as needed the contribution of McMaster’s holdings to specialized databases (e.g., the English Short Title Catalogue).
  • Support online access to the Division’s collections by creating or editing bibliographic or other records to facilitate generation of metadata for digitization processes. Assist as needed in the provision of metadata to shared digital repositories such as HathiTrust, Internet Archive, or others in which the Library may participate.
  • Participate in the management of the Division’s collections, including their security, proper storage, and efficient use of storage spaces.
  • As scheduled, provide research help in the William Ready Division.
  • Assist as requested in the Division’s teaching and outreach activities and in promoting use of the Division’s collections by McMaster students and faculty, as well as external users.
This is a full time, 24-month contractually-limited appointment reporting to the Associate University Librarian, Distinctive Collections. Normally scheduled weekly hours will be Monday – Friday, 9:00am – 5:00pm (35 hours/week).Qualifications:The successful candidate must have the following:
  • A Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited school of library and information science or its equivalent.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and standards used in the description of published resources, including RDA/AACR2/DCRM, LCSH, and Library of Congress Classification.
  • Reading knowledge of French sufficient for bibliographic description.
Additional qualifications that may be beneficial include:
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience in cataloguing special collections materials.
  • Experience with Ex Libris’s Alma library services platform.
  • Reading knowledge of Latin and other European languages, especially Italian and German, sufficient for bibliographic description.
Compensation:It is anticipated that the appointment will be made at the rank of Librarian I, II, or III, with an annual salary range of $61,040.74-$87,948.94, $66,590.09-$98,238.69, or $72,139.43-$109,044.61 respectively. This position is included in the McMaster University Academic Librarians’ Association bargaining unit. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
