Job Description

Technical Lead, Operations Engineering, opticsL3HARRIS WESCAM DivisionHamilton, OntarioAbout L3HARRIS WESCAMAs a subsidiary of L3Harris Technologies and within the Integrated Mission Systems Segment, the WESCAM division develops the most advanced optical sensor and targeting systems for global defense and military sectors, National Security, Search & Rescue and Airborne law enforcement agencies. From long-range covert surveillance missions to search and rescue operations, our MX-series systems, and the mission systems solutions they are a part of, produce stabilized high-magnification electro1-optical and infrared images from airborne, marine and ground based platforms, enabling our customers to see first and act first.Primary ResponsibilitiesThis role is a Technical Lead within the Operations Engineering, Optics Team, focused on quality and reliability of MX Products. Working in a cross-functional team with engineering, production, manufacturing engineering and procurement, this person is responsible for improving the quality of WESCAM product, in accordance with product specifications and quality standards. This role is responsible for ensuring WESCAM’s new product is manufacturable and has robust processes through the production lifecycle. This person also provides technical support to other ME’s with their expertise in manufacturing, optics, and product quality.

  • Responsibility for development of assigned projects as a team leader and as a technical contributor within the Operations Engineering, Optics Team. This position bridges leadership and technical responsibilities.
  • Take an active role in the development of the team.
  • Support the management team in the performance assessment of personnel during yearly reviews.
  • Assist with the onboarding of new Systems Manufacturing Engineering team members.
  • Formulate specific tasks based on overall departmental goals defined by the manager and team.
  • Contribute to and execute the technology and capital roadmap.
  • Determine, assign and manage tasks with team members allocated to specific projects. Work with the Manager to choose the proper skillset for the project.
  • Flow down tasks and assignments to allocated team members and manage to completion.
  • Provide guidance to the team on best practices of project management.
  • Schedule and actively participate in technical design reviews.
  • Responsible for the development of manufacturing processes and procedures for WESCAM products.
  • Actively explore methods to achieve an optimal Integration and Test Process using tools such as Statistical Process Control, Design of Experiments, PFMEA.
  • Support and be the point of contact at daily Management status meetings
  • Actively participate in Production sustaining meetings and NPI stage gates.
  • Provide backfill or assistance to a production cell.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical problems from Production, Engineering, and Service.
  • Provide the required metrics, reports and performance measures to the management team.
  • Identify and expose failure trends, proposing projects to improve the Integration and Test Process
  • Participate in cross-functional teams to resolve systemic issues across all product lines
  • Provide technical support to other areas of the organization including all Operations engineering disciplines, Customer Service Groups, In-Country Assembly, Supply Chain and Design Engineering.
  • Develop a strong presence across Operations and other areas of the business to maximize collaboration and synergy in an effort to meet company goals.
  • Watch for new technologies and leadership trends that may impact present and future product development.
  • Complete other tasks and projects as assigned by the management team.
Required Capabilities
  • Track record of being a strong technical contributor across a wide range of technical problems and across multiple developments
  • Have shown leadership potential on assigned projects.
  • Have shown the ability to build and maintain professional relationships within and outside of Operations.
  • Skilled at debugging and testing systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities within a Project-based environment
  • Excellent knowledge of Systems, Electro-Mechanical, Electro-Optical Manufacturing and Process Engineering.
  • Technical communication skills both verbal and written.
  • In depth knowledge of lean manufacturing and continuous improvement principles.
  • Coaching and mentoring using essentials of Emotional Intelligence.
  • AS9100 knowledge and experience an asset, but not required.
  • Experience using SolidWorks, Composer and AutoCAD an asset, but not required.
  • Experience using Matlab, Zeemax, and Code 5 an asset, but not required.
Desired Education and Experiences
  • Must have a well-rounded optical background with Manufacturing Engineering experience in a high tech environment.
  • University degree; or 3-year College diploma coupled with relevant work experience in Optics or Manufacturing Engineering.
  • 5-10 years of work experience in a manufacturing engineering capacity.
  • Lean certification or equivalent industry experience.
  • PMP designation an asset, but not required
  • P.Eng designation an asset, but not required
