The Office is charged with maximizing the financial gift support to the institution by seeking private contributions in order to increase the margin of excellence of its educational and research programs.The Advancement Officer will work closely with the Director of Development, senior leadership, faculty and the Advancement team to develop strategic direction and management of fundraising strategies, building towards a major gift portfolio for a specified School, Faculty or Division.As the role is responsible for bolstering philanthropic support and inspiring greater student, alumni and community engagement, they will manage the effective and efficient operation of development activities, including fundraising campaigns, prospect research, alumni relations and donor stewardship. The role identifies prospective supporters, builds relationships and makes face-to-face contact both independently and in conjunction with faculty and other advancement staff.The Advancement Officer requires an ability to identify, build and maintain strong and cooperative relationships with individuals, corporate donors, and other charitable giving organizations. The Officer must keep informed of trends and best practices in philanthropy and fund development as well as the not-for-profit sector.MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIESThe work scope includes, but is not limited to, research, the development of prospect lists, cultivation and stewardship planning and execution, as well as working towards medium gift asks for Thompson Rivers University. The Advancement Officer will be responsible for developing and implementing comprehensive strategies and tactical plans for identifying, cultivating and securing short-term and long-term revenue channels for the overall sustainable financial growth of a specified School, Faculty or Division.The Advancement Officer provides management, support and direction across a wide range of areas:

  • Creates and provides editing support of collateral, proposals and cases for support to detail and market the fundraising initiative of the related faculty or department.
  • Develops and implements plans for fundraising initiatives and special projects as assigned.
  • Writes proposals, donor solicitation letters and grant application forms to secure funding for student awards, research, and capital projects.
  • Liaises with senior members of the Advancement team to identify key alumni, individuals and businesses for the purpose of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship.
  • Works closely with prospects and donors as assigned and updates the Director of Development of progress with these prospects and donors on a weekly basis.
  • Responsible for making a minimum of 1-2 asks per month and/or supporting significant asks under the direction of the Director of Development.
  • Responsible for having regular contact with prospects and donors to help ensure fundraising targets are met.
  • Responsible for ensuring a targeted number of prospects attend Foundation fundraising events and managing RSVPs.
  • Creates and cultivates relationships with prospects and donors, through one on one introductions and participation in social events.
  • Responsible for handling sensitive and confidential information and using appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with donors, alumni and community members.
  • Is considered a representative of the University in all dealings and communications with alumni and donors.
  • Other duties as assigned.
