This project aims to provide community education to improve women’s experiences in the family justice system, and advocates for the recognition of violence and trauma faced by women and the complexities of their needs.Working alongside the Senior Legal Clinic Lawyer and the Program Manager, the Legal Researcher will support the team by conducting research, ensuring access to relevant, up-to-date, and accurate information, reporting and presenting the findings and creating content for workbooks, info packages, and other resources for the public.Key Responsibilities

  • Research intimate partner violence/gender-based violence trends in the province of British Columbia and the community of Kamloops.
  • Research the Family Court System in BC and Kamloops, with the purpose to:
- Understand systems and processes women and families having to navigate.- Analyse trends in the barriers faced by women and families.- Identify the gaps in services.- Identify impacts of trauma and links with the family court system
  • Communicate research findings to the Senior Lawyer and Program Manager
  • In collaboration with the Senior Lawyer and Program Manager
- Review and proofread advertising materials prepared by the graphic designer.- Identify key experts to be invited to the conference panel as speakers.- Prepare content for the workbooks and informational packages for clients navigating the family court system in BC and Kamloops.- Prepare content for the workbooks and informational packages for community professionals supporting clients navigating the family court system in BC and Kamloops.
  • Apply a trauma-informed lens to the product development
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Requirements
  • Education in the legal field – Paralegal or Legal Assistance Diploma or enrolment at least in the second year of a Law Program.
  • At least 1 year of legal research experience and knowledge of and access to relevant resources.
  • Or equivalent combination of education, training and experience
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail while conducting thorough and in-depth research
  • Knowledge of the legal/court system
  • Familiarity with the impacts of gender-based violence and the particular challenges that come with intersectionality
  • Ability to synthesize complex information and present it in an easy-to-understand, accessible way
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work effectively as an individual and as a team member
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Maintaining sensitivity towards cultural, religious, economic & social beliefs, values & opinions
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, and other Microsoft Office Programs
