More information can be found here.An opportunity to protect BC’s ecological, social, cultural and economic values from the threat of terrestrial and aquatic invasive species.Invasive plant management in British Columbia is a highly complex, multi-jurisdictional issue. The Ministry of Forests is responsible for the delivery of invasive plant program activities on provincial public lands and collaborates and cooperates with all levels of government, including First Nations and non-government agencies to accomplish this work.As part of the Range Branch Invasive Plant team, the Biological Control Specialist, will lead the development and operational delivery of biological control to address invasive plant species throughout BC. Specific responsibilities will include working with international and national Governments and partners, introduction of new biocontrol agents, monitoring their establishment and effectiveness at controlling the target invasive plant species populations, overseeing the collection and redistribution of established biocontrol agents, conducting trials, developing standards, informing policy, and sharing results to inform practitioners and the broader national and international research scientist community. Invasive Plant Specialists including the Biological control specialist are experts in the field of invasive plant management that provide expert technical advice and support to regional staff, all levels of Government, and stakeholders.This position participates in program administration including development and management of annual budgets, and administration and monitoring of Government Transfer Agreements and contracts. As the Biocontrol Specialist, you will be required to remain current on emerging biological control opportunities, invasive plant threats, and research results. You will also work to ensure biocontrol release and monitoring activities data are collected and entered in the Provincial database.As an ideal candidate, you will be self-motivated, flexible, curious and have strong teamwork and analytical thinking skills. You will have an extensive knowledge of integrated pest management, particularly biocontrol, and welcome the challenges and rewards of working with diverse groups toward common objectives.   • Master of Science or higher in Entomology, Range Management, Agriculture, Biology or a related field (i.e., Natural Resources or Environmental Sciences), or equivalent as recognized by the relevant association, with at least three years of related experience; OR
  • Bachelor of Science in one of these fields with at least five years of related experience.
  • Registered, or eligible for full registration, as a Professional Agrologist with the BC Institute of Agrologists.
Related experience includes:
  • Experience in the principles of integrated pest management and invasive plant prevention and control and their application under BC conditions.
  • Experience in the use of invasive plant treatment methods including biological control.
  • Experience in monitoring vegetation communities with advanced plant taxonomy skills.
  • Experience in negotiating and mediating solutions with stakeholders in natural resource management.
  • Experience supervising, leading, coaching and mentoring staff.
  • Experience delivering public consultation processes dealing with natural resource management.
  • Experience with analyzing and compiling technical data into final reports and presentations.
  • Operational experience in invasive plant management, range management, forest and range ecology or vegetation monitoring. Entomology experience preferred.
Preferences:
  • Experience in the field of Entomology such as monitoring insect populations and understanding lifecycles.
  • Experience in operational invasive plant management including working with insects, mobile data collection, and creation and delivery of technical reports and presentations to various audiences.
  • Experience successfully working with diverse groups to resolve natural resource management challenges.
  • Experience in program administration including allocating resources, managing/supervising staff and administering budgets.
  • Experience working with Indigenous Peoples and/or Governments.
