Subject to final project adjudication by Mitacs, the City of Kamloops and Thompson Rivers University are creating a Postdoctoral Fellowship to support “The Researcher-in-Residence Initiative.”The RiR reflects TRU’s commitment to leadership in community engagement, as articulated in the University’s Vision Statement ten-year goal to “Lead in community research and scholarship. We will support all faculty members in knowledge-seeking, knowledge creation, and creative inquiry. We will earn recognition as the most committed and innovative university in Canada for research and scholarship based on community partnerships; for involving graduate students in community-centred research; and for undergraduate research training.” This partnership with the City helps foster and incubate community-engaged research, civic involvement, partnership development, action-oriented knowledge creation, and enhanced opportunities for student research training. The RiR Initiative proposes to expand the work of a currently-funded cultural mapping program while also studying the efficacy of participatory mapping protocols and community engaged research more generally. It is designed as a means to focus community dialogue on healthy communities; to document and make visible the voices of those with lived and living experience; to generate enhanced community participation in municipal planning; to integrate community-engaged research practices, and to co-develop solutions and evidence-based decisions. Recognizing the opportunity for informed research and collaboration in municipal planning, the proposed research will also focus on how the process of cultural mapping and community engaged research can be employed in mutually-identified projects that will inform and animate the City’s new Cultural Strategic Plan. The Researcher-in-Residence (RiR) will be appointed as a postdoctoral fellow experienced in community-engaged research theory and practice, and responsible for developing and managing projects, conducting research, designing and facilitating workshops, developing partnerships, brokering research/scholarly work, and supervising students. The position offered for a period of three years will provide opportunities for the researcher to work closely with the faculty supervisor’s research program on cultural mapping, developing independent lines of research inquiry and exploring the proposition that small cities are increasingly challenged to develop cultural and social policies—and related cultural policy research methodologies—that are expected to work with (or for) other policy areas such as economic development, social inclusion, and urban planning. Cultural mapping has been identified as a ready approach and platform for this intersectoral work. (For further details on the faculty supervisor’s research program, see https://wgp.trubox.ca/research/ ).Offering first-hand experience and expertise in community-engaged research, the RiR works under the direction of the faculty supervisor and alongside City of Kamloops staff, University staff, faculty and students, as well as with citizens of all stripes (businesses, community organizations and groups, individuals), to conduct research that informs the development of promising solutions to pressing challenges facing the municipality and the region. Anticipated areas of research and policy development would begin with those affected by COVID-19, and include development of the City’s Cultural Strategic Plan, a cultural mapping of the opioid crisis, and expand to issues related to housing, homelessness, healthy communities, childcare, care and services for vulnerable populations, local and regional economic and cultural development, community and neighbourhood development; tourism, food security, emergency management modeling, emergency management response, and the integration of cultural mapping and community-engaged research in municipal planning and policy development.TRU and the City share a common goal to build a vibrant, resilient community that positions the City’s prominent role in the interior of British Columbia and TRU as one of the province’s leading regional research universities. This unique postdoctoral initiative allows the RiR to divide time equally between the University and the City of Kamloops. Working under the mentorship of a faculty supervisor, the RiR works directly on city projects and also matches campus researchers with city departments and projects looking for help with anything from conducting surveys and literature reviews, to holding workshops and prototyping new products and services. The RiR acts as a knowledge broker, coordinating faculty/student research teams, with the aim of bringing together municipal, community, and university expertise and knowledge. The position will be funded though a Mitacs Accelerate Grant, a SSHRC research grant, and the City of Kamloops, with a salary of $80,000 per year plus full university benefits: Medical Services Plan, Extended Medical Services Plan, Dental Plan Insurance, Grouplife Insurance, Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance, Short Term and Long Term Disability Benefits, and Pension Plan Enrolment. This is a three-year position subject initially to the availability of Mitacs funding approval and the annual performance of the candidate.QUALIFICATIONSA Ph.D. (completed within the last five years) in any field related to community development, urban planning, cultural and participatory mapping, and/or community-engaged research. Strong research skills and demonstrated commitment to community-engaged research, project management, and knowledge translation are required.
