Job Description

The CompanyGrowers Supply Company Limited is a wholesale and retail supplier of agricultural products in BC with 5 locations throughout the Okanagan and Kootenay region.The PositionThe role of the Agricultural/Horticultural Sales Specialist is to identify, review and recommend crop inputs. Technical Sales Agronomist drives sales of products being promoted and sold at the different Growers Supply stores in the Okanagan and Kootenay region.It will include assisting growers or customers improve their quality yield in a more sustainable manner through making sound input on irrigated crop production.This also include risk management decisions in the areas of precise agriculture, crop planning, nutrient, weed, disease, insect, irrigation, and harvest management.ResponsibilitiesThe following key responsibilities are listed below within the scope of the position followed by specific activities associated with each responsibility. This position may require the individual to perform additional duties as required.Agricultural Services

  • Assist growers and producers with crop production and risk management decisions
  • Quality, timely and uniform applications as related to all decisions.
  • Provide producers with skilled soil and plant analysis to determine crop nutrient needs and match solutions.
  • Do site visits to collect and analyze samples and interpret the results as needed.
  • Evaluate crop performance, fertigation, irrigation scheduling and IPM as affected by weather, pests, and management practices
  • Together with the grower, identify and recommend which farming products or practices may be best in a particular field
Administrative Duties
  • Keep up with regular paperwork, analyzing data, and preparing reports and articles
  • Research new technology and new advancements in agriculture and prepare recommendations
  • Organize and facilitate workshops and information sessions for both growers and staff
Communications
  • Communicate on the phone and in meetings with clients, government departments, colleagues, and experts in the field
  • Communicate with the research community to develop and extend new technologies and practices to producers for their agricultural businesses.
  • Responding to requests from clients via phone, chat / SMS and e-mailing
Additional Duties
  • Provide technical support to purchasing, sales and marketing
  • Carry out training of technical field staff on soil sampling, leaf and sap analysis and related topics
The CandidateKnowledge:
  • WorkSafe BC regulations
  • Managing soils, plant and water test results and recommendations, ensuring soil nutrient applications meet sustainable criteria
  • Determining plant and soil health while advising modifications to meet sustainable production
  • Strong understanding of Agricultural/Horticulture Services, micro irrigation, farm customers and the agriculture industry
  • Strong understanding of the all-crop inputs business and the significance of supplier relationships
  • Hand-on working experience in the horticultural or related industry
  • Solid understanding of pesticide usage in food crops
Skills:
  • Customer service skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Computer literacy to operate inventory programs and software
  • Strong reasoning, mathematical and analytical skill sets
  • Accuracy and attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining respect for others
  • Ability to think clearly and independently on involved and complex work
Qualifications Education - Essential:
    • Degree in Horticulture or related discipline OR diploma in Horticulture or related discipline plus equivalent work experience
    • Working and production experience in agriculture or horticulture is essential
    • Knowledge of requirements & equipment used in micro-irrigated land
    • Approved P-Ag
Training - Essential:
    • Strong hands-on agricultural production knowledge
    • Proficient computer knowledge
    • MS Office with strong excel capabilities
  • Preferred:
  • Advanced computer skills with tablet or similar input
  • GIS & strong appreciation of data is a knowledge that would be beneficial
  • Comfortable using Apps associated with data collection
Experience:
  • Essential: Min 5+ years related experience, or equivalent
  • Preferred: Ideally 7-10+ years of related experience, or equivalent
