Job Description

If you dont meet 100% of the preferred skills outlined in this job posting, tell us why youd be a great fit for Urban Systems in your cover letter!About the OpportunityUrban Systems is currently looking for a planning student or recent graduate to join our Kelowna practice for a 4- to 12- month paid internship starting January 2022. Flexibility to work from home does exist, although from time to time, we may need assistance with client work or in-person meetings (pending COVID-19 restrictions). Therefore, the individual would need to reside in Kelowna.We strive to create internship opportunities that are challenging, rewarding and offer exposure to the multi-faceted nature of planning. Our goal is for you to come away with new perspectives and an enhanced skill set that will serve you well in your career as a community planner. In this position, you will find yourself in a fast-paced consulting environment, working alongside planners and other professionals on a diverse range of projects for a diverse range of clients. We will aim to provide as much freedom and responsibility as you are able to handle, based on the quality of your work, your interests, and your enthusiasm. In general, you can expect to be involved in the following kinds of activities:

  • Conducting research, preparing background reports, and supporting projects for local government clients (i.e. land use plans, growth strategies, needs assessments, bylaws, community engagement, etc.);
  • Assisting in the preparation of proposals, presentations, engagement materials (e.g. surveys, workbooks), and reports;
  • Analysis of community engagement results, socioeconomic statistics, and municipal finance figures; and
  • Attending client and public meetings as required (these may be virtual or in-person in accordance with COVID-19 health and safety standards, depending on the current state of the global pandemic).
About YouThis position is designed for undergraduate students currently enrolled in an urban, rural, or environmental planning degree or graduate students currently enrolled in a planning program accredited by the Canadian Institute of Planners. This position is also open to recent graduates from an undergraduate or graduate planning degree program. We are also open to considering strong candidates from other backgrounds.   • Great communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to write well, think critically, ask questions, and work collaboratively;
  • Interest in research, and experience collecting and analyzing qualitative and/or quantitative data;
  • Interest in exploring a wide range of planning topics, including land use planning, housing, parks and recreation, economic development, community governance, local government finance, and transportation;
  • Interest in working with an array of clients throughout the Okanagan and potentially other communities in Western Canada;
  • Strong work ethic and a commitment to producing high-quality work;
  • Service-focused with a commitment to exceeding client expectations; and
  • Demonstrated passion and enthusiasm for community planning.
