You’re excellent working on deadline but you also have the time-management skills and the attention to detail to produce marquee, enterprise stories. You’re the type of journalist who doesn’t follow the pack and can find stories that aren’t being told. You understand the importance of making connections and developing relationships with a wide range of people in the region you’re covering, especially with underrepresented groups. You’re the type of reporter who’s comfortable producing a story based on documents, but you’re in your element when you’re in the community talking to people.This job will be based in Kingston and you must be comfortable working remotely. You’ll be asked to do a variety of work, from covering breaking news to producing enterprise or investigative pieces. Importantly, you’ll be tasked with telling stories about Kingston and the surrounding area for both a local audience and the wider Eastern Ontario audience.Activities:Pitches innovative stories and digital/social treatments.Files for three platforms (digital, radio and TV) but with a focus on digital and radio.Develops and maintains contacts with sources and community figures to ensure current knowledge of issues and events.Is a regular contributor to All in a Day, CBC Ottawa’s afternoon current affairs radio program, which broadcasts in Kingston.Is visible in the community as a representative of CBC in a variety of ways, from pop-up shifts reporting from different parts of the city, to live reporting for TV and radio, to helping coordinate remote radio shows from Kingston.Capable of self-assigning based on local subject matter expertise.Flexible working hours in order to properly cover the city.We are looking for a candidate with the following:A university degree in journalism OR equivalent work experienceA minimum of three years experience in journalism.A thorough understanding of CBCs Journalistic Standards and Practices.Proven critical thinking skills and news judgment in high pressure situations.An excellent ability at finding stories not being told elsewhere and an understanding of why those stories should be told.A deep curiosity and ability to quickly soak up information.A comfort with radio and TV journalism or a strong desire to quickly develop those skills.An ability to work independently but also adept at receiving assignments and working with a variety of editors.A history of breaking news and quick turnarounds.A track record of quickly turning complex issues into a steady flow of compelling news stories.An ability to think with sweep in terms of story ideas but also able to quickly get to the core of any single story.An understanding of the key issues facing people in Kingston.Excellent troubleshooting skills.An ability to work flexible hours in a high-pressure, tight deadline environment, often in unexpected overtime situations.A sense of humour.Excellent interpersonal skills.Excellent writing and communication skills.Valid drivers licence.Please include a link to samples of your work in your cover letter.If this sounds interesting, please click on Apply online.
