Job Description

As a member of the growing team, the Greenhouse Associate is a vital role to ensure that plant health is monitored and maintained according to Health Canada Regulations and Operational Requirements. Reporting to the Team Lead or designate, this role requires the applicant to be detail oriented and a self-starter that can work with a diverse team of professionals. The Greenhouse Associate is responsible for general horticultural duties in the greenhouse, such as planting, cultivating, and harvesting horticultural specialties, such as cannabis, and performing related duties applying a working knowledge of environmental control, irrigation and fertilization systems and techniques. He or she will perform physical labour both indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.This position is based out of Kingsville, Ontario.Job Duties:

  • Ascertain growing schedules and deviations from established procedures from grower or manager.
  • Sow seeds and plant cuttings.
  • Prepare soil and canisters/planters for planting.
  • Review bloom development, and soil conditions to determine nutrient and moisture requirements and to detect and identify germ and pest infestations.
  • Apply herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides to destroy undesirable growth and pests, using spray wand connected to solution tank.
  • Graft scions to seedling stock.
  • Pollinate, prune, transplant, and pinch plants, and cull flowers, branches, fruit, and plants to ensure development of marketable products.
  • Harvest, pack, and store crop, using techniques appropriate for individual horticultural specialty.
  • May mix planting soil, following prescribed procedures.
  • May record information, such as chemicals used, grafting performed, and environmental conditions, to maintain required records.
  • Prepare soil; plant bulbs, seeds, and cuttings; graft and bud plants; and transplant seedlings and rooted cuttings.
  • Spray trees, shrubs, flowers, and plants to prevent disease and pests.
  • Position and regulate greenhouse and outdoor irrigation systems to water plants and fields
  • Dig, cut, and transplant trees, shrubs, flowers, and plants and prepare them for sale.
  • Operate machinery and equipment to fertilize, cultivate, harvest and spray fields and plants.
  • Clean working area.
  • Apply fungicides, insecticides and other chemicals as required or directed.
  • Evaluate and manage the watering programs in the greenhouses.
  • Control plant growth and development through pruning and shaping of plants.
  • Perform stick cutting and other production tasks as directed.
  • Detect, report and control all plant health and pest problems.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent.
  • Ability to easily identify various plant varieties.
  • Good observation skills to detect disease and pests.
  • Ability to follow safe procedures for use of fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides, and herbicides.
  • Basic reading, writing and computer skills.
  • Moderate physical strength and stamina.
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate detailed instructions orally and in writing.
  • Ability to multi-task and establish priorities.
  • Ability to work independently in a busy environment.
  • Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment.
  • Able to work well under pressure.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to interpret and implement company policies and procedures.
Your Environment:
  • 24/7 availability may be required. Work week is Monday to Saturday.
  • Physical ability to lift up to 75lb.
  • Safety equipment will be required, e.g. steel-toed safety boots, safety glasses/goggles, etc.
  • Overtime as required.
  • Hazards associated with the trade.
  • Noisy with fumes.
  • Long hours which may entail 12 hours or more per working day.
  • Conditions in the greenhouse may be hot and humid in the summer.
  • Prolonged standing, walking, lifting, squatting and bending.
