Job Description

Staff will require clearance from Employee Health and Wellness before they are able to begin any position within SMGH.Position Summary :The Extern Mentor/Coordinator (EMC) role provides leadership opportunities for experienced healthcare providers who are in good standing with their regulatory body. EMCs are responsible for supportingExterns’practiceandintegrationintotheclinicalareainaccordancewithorganizationalandprofessionalstandards, and in collaboration with clinical teams.Position Responsibilities:

  • Support integration of Externs at the organizational and unit level
  • Contribute to Extern onboarding
  • Create, adapt, and deliver orientation and learning resources
  • Aid in integration of team processes and role clarity
  • Assist Externs to become familiar with the work in their new area of practice
  • Support unit teams to collaborate with Externs to provide required patient care
  • Maintain regular unit presence to support ongoing education needs and tracking of required skills attainment
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and evaluations of Extern role
  • Coordinate the scheduling aspects of the Extern program
  • Promote Extern staff wellness and team wellbeing
  • Serve as a liaison and conduit between the unit leadership, Professional Practice, and Operations
Position Requirements:
  • Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Excellent clinical skills and competencies
  • Current acute care experience
  • Outstanding communication skills
  • Previous experience teaching, working with learners and/or preceptoring
  • Knowledge of principles of adult learning
  • Thorough understanding of infection prevention and control practices
Preferred Requirements:
  • Strong leadership, change management, and problem-solving skills
  • Recent patient care experience preferred
  • Proven organizational skills and ability to prioritize workload
  • Previous experience as Clinical Instructor or placement supervisor
  • Established abilities in conflict resolution
  • Demonstrated computer literacy
  • Compliance with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all
  • Commitment to providing an exceptional experience for staff and patients within a challenging and exciting health care environment
  • Model behaviours aligned with the vision and values of St. Mary’s General Hospital
