Job Description

Job Title: Voiseys Bay - MechanicPosition Type Full TimeLocation Voiseys Bay, Newfoundland, CanadaProject: Voisey’s BayLocation: East coast of Labrador (approximately 350 km North ofGoose Bay and 35 km Southwest of Nain).Rotation: 2 weeks in 2 weeks outShift Length: 12 hoursTravel: Provided from airport closest to point of hireAccommodation: Remote site – camp settingCompensation: Comprehensive benefitsJob Summary: Under the supervision of the Lead Mechanic and/or the Underground Superintendent, the primary role of the Mechanic is to perform preventive maintenance and repairs to diesel, electrical, hydraulic and air operated equipment. This includes mobile equipment, generators, compressors, drills, small tools and miscellaneous equipment of a similar nature.Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to comprehend written and verbal instructions as required to perform assigned duties in a safe and efficient manner
  • Perform diagnostic testing to identify problems and determine the solution to solve the problem
  • Familiar with underground Mobile equipment Braking regulations/testing and adjusting such components.
  • Adjust equipment and repair or replace defective parts, components or systems.
  • Test repaired equipment for proper performance and to ensure that work meets manufacturer specifications.
  • Comply with all Redpath and Owners safety regulations and procedures.
  • Identify unsafe conditions in underground headings - high level of alertness required
  • Train and mentor new employees and/or apprentices.

Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Journeyperson level qualification (trade school or college diploma) – (preferred)
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred)
  • Basic literacy (read, write, basic math and read blue print) required
  • Ontario Hard Rock Underground Service Type Common Core (or other provincial equivalent) (required)
  • Minimum 3 years maintenance and repairs to underground mining equipment
  • 2 years’ experience in an underground mining environment (preferred)
  • Ability to multi task and work effectively
  • Ability to work efficiently as part of a team as well as independently
  • Ability to read, and understand Hydraulic/Electrical Schematics
  • Ability to use and understand Engine/Powertrain Diagnostic Software, both Handheld, and computer based.
  • Ability to use/understand parts and service manuals, able to make parts lists for repairs required and or use service manuals to assist in diagnostics, and proper repair procedures.
  • Ability to Service/Diagnose Diesel Engines of many types and makes
  • Ability to Service/Diagnose All Powertrain/Brake Components of Many types and makes
  • Familiar with underground Mobile equipment Braking regulations//testing and adjusting such components.
Health and Safety:
  • Have the authority and responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment
  • Follow Company and Client health and safety standards and report all unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor
  • Responsible for the use and maintenance of all safety equipment, i.e. PPE, lanyards, warning signs and labeling, according to company rules and applicable legislation.
  • Ensure permits are in place and lock 0ut tag out procedures are followed
  • Responsible to ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment.
  • Ensure that workers are qualified and capable to safely performing the assigned work
  • Must have knowledge of the WHMIS legislation and know how to effectively use an MSDS sheet.
  • Work in accordance with local legislation
