We are currently looking to fill the position of Environmental Scientist/Contaminated Sites Professional.Accountabilities: As part of the Environmental Services team the Environmental Scientist/Contaminated Sites Professional is responsible for providing science and contaminated sites expertise to selected aspects of the business and multiple workgroups. Environmental Services supports all environmental aspects of electricity generation and delivery across Nova Scotia Power Inc. You will liaise with internal departments and external regulatory departments/agencies in providing this support across NSPI.You will provide expertise related to regulatory (environmental) approvals and contaminated sites monitoring, remediation and management programs, including support for environmental management systems (EMS) and other environmental programs across NSPI. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Supporting the environmental aspects of operations, construction, and maintenance activities; including the development and implementation of plans to mitigate and/or minimize the environmental effects of undertakings across NSPI, with particular emphasis on solids (coal, ash) management, and discharges to land, water and air from NSPI assets and facilities;
  • Providing immediate guidance, leadership and support for unexpected releases from NSPI assets/equipment;
  • Supporting environmental monitoring, studies, remediation and compliance programs related to historical contamination at NSPI facilities;
  • Supporting the management of contaminated sites through the completion and/or management of Phase 1 and 2 Environmental Site Assessments and/or the development and initiation of remedial action plans;
  • Review and approval of contractor/consultant Health and Safety Plans and assisting with the site supervision and auditing of contractor services to ensure compliance;
  • Analyzing data and preparing reports for regulatory departments/agencies in support of contaminated sites programs and activities across NSPI;
  • Review of groundwater and surface water consultant reports associated with NSPI thermal generating facilities;
  • Supervision of Regional Environmental Scientists supporting the implementation of environmental programs across the four regions of the province. As the team lead, you will foster strong working relationships with NSPI business leaders.
You will be responsible for your personal safety and that of your co-workers by observing all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations and the requirements of the Nova Scotia Power Safety Program.Skills, Capabilities and Experience:
  • You will have completed a Bachelor of Science degree or a Bachelor of Engineering degree. You will have a minimum of five years of relevant experience.
  • Registered as a P. Eng or P. Geo with a Contaminated Sites Professional designation.
  • Knowledge of relevant NS environmental legislation, regulations, codes and standards.
  • Knowledge and experience with pollution control equipment for large industrial sites.
  • Knowledge and experience with emergency oil release response.
  • Experienced in all facets of contaminated sites field work, including Proficiency in the completion of Environmental Site Assessment Phase 1 and 2, and development or initiation of remedial action plans.
  • Experience with leading and developing people and teams is preferred.
