Job Description

Ketler Farms is a joint venture operation with Nature Fresh Farms Inc. It is a 30-acre state-of-the-art greenhouse facility that is committed to quality vegetable production. We are seeking a committed Junior Grower with passion and drive to support our greenhouse operations.Job Overview Reporting to the Operational Grower, the Junior Grower will assist with all aspects of growing greenhouse produce including but not limited to taking water samples, mixing fertilizer, recording and measuring plant data, assessing crop health, monitoring growth and yields, and training staff.Job Specific Duties

  • Inspect the crop daily to check the status of the plant health, possible challenges/issues.
  • Look for and learn crop behavior, vegetative and generative growth, nutrient deficiencies.
  • Make observations and analysis from the crop regarding pruning, leafing, and picking to determine next strategies,
  • Mix fertilizers as per instructions given by the Operational Grower.
  • Reviewing the crop on a weekly and monthly basis with consultant to enhance growing techniques and procedures.
  • Ensuring mixing room is always kept clean and organized.
  • Daily collection and testing of drip and drain water.
  • Weekly collection of water, leaf, and fruit samples for analysis.
  • Learning how to use climate & irrigation program to reset alarms – may be after hours
  • Interpreting results and adjust fertilizer recipes as per consultant guidelines.
  • Collect weekly crop registration such as plant growth, leaf length, set fruit, fruit weights etc.
  • Scouting for pests and disease and collaborating with the crop scouts.
  • Applying pesticide treatments as necessary.
  • Responsible for washing and sterilizing the greenhouses at the end of each crop season.
  • Help with planting and ensure the greenhouse is ready for planting.
  • Rotate On Call schedules for afterhours and weekends.
  • Operate the roof washer to brush/clean and apply shade to the roof.
  • Bioreactor duties including monitoring levels, temperatures, mixing fertilizers, collecting samples for routine testing, reading and interpreting data, removing sludge, routing cleaning, training on alarms.
  • Compliance with regards to Good Manufacturing Practices, Health and Safety, Food Safety, HACCP, and all company policies and procedures
  • Reporting any maintenance concerns, submitting work orders
  • Support crop cleanout by ensuring the structure is cleaned and sanitized thoroughly before planting new crop.
  • Actively initiate, participate in, and support continuous improvement initiatives
  • Any other duties as assigned
Qualifications · Diploma in botany, horticulture or agriculture is an asset but not a requirement· 3+ years of growing experience is required· Ability to communicate effectively in English – reading & writing, Spanish an asset· Willingness to learn and grow in the position, commitment to continuous learning· Functional experience with Microsoft 365Working Conditions· Junior Growers walk, sit, and stand throughout the day, working at heights and utilizing a scissor cart when needed· The greenhouse may be hot, wet, humid, or cold at any time during the year· Working with bees, various pests and diseases on tomatoes, peppers, or cucumbers· Able to work well with minimal supervision for the majority of the day· Regular hours of work are Monday-Saturday.
