Job Description

The Community Ministry Worker and Driver works under the direction of the Community Ministries Coordinator and/or designate, and provides exceptional customer service, merchandising, tidy maintenance of the warehouse, sorting donations, occasional deliveries for the Food Bank and Thrift Store, and creating a positive work environment.KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Service Responsibilities – Warehouse {80%}

  • Greet and interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
  • Assist donors with their contributions and determines usable condition, unload donations and place stock in appropriate warehouse location.
  • Maintain the proper sorting and processing of all donated goods, ensure compliance with quality standards; that all products are priced correctly as per store policy, properly recycling the donations that are not suitable for resale.
  • Contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient courteous customer service; use tact when dealing with difficult customers.
  • Process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, pricing, and storing donations.
  • Take Recycling to Trailer as needed and Metal to Scrap Yard as required.
  • Ensures electrical donations are in working order.
  • Knowledgeable regarding product pricing and featured sale products; protect the integrity of all donated items.
  • Maintain store opening and closing procedures as required.
  • Assist with store layout plans to attract customers; ensures attractiveness of the store through “Tidy Maintenance”.
  • Assist with donation turnover, replenish inventory levels on the sales floor and remove inventory from sales floor as directed.
  • Handle the merchandise in a safe and organized manner; assist in stock rotation.
  • Notify supervisor when recycling trailer is needing to be picked up.
  • Daily lockup check of all bins, trailers, and storage containers.
  • Work with volunteers as assigned.
Service Responsibilities – Driver {20%}
  • Drive to Toronto twice a month or as needed.
  • Operate, inspect, and maintain vehicle and related documentation.
  • Document/report any vehicle incidents or damage in a timely manner.
  • Unload donations from the program vehicle and ensure the safe and careful handling of all items, while protecting property including donations and the vehicle.
  • Ensure donated items are placed in designated areas.
  • Provide all donors with professional and courteous service.
  • Ensure that any spillage is cleaned up and maintain the required level of cleanliness within the site and vehicle.
  • Record information on pick-ups and deliveries, vehicle mileage, fuel costs and any problems encountered.
  • Fuel the vehicle as necessary and ensure that the vehicle is kept clean and presentable at all times.
Health and Safety
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensure the safe and careful handling of all deliveries, donations etc. while protecting the property and donations.
  • Responsible for the following, to use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness.
  • Report any safety issues immediately and ensure care is taken with all equipment and property.
Perform other duties as required.WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • 1 year contract part-time position based on 20 hours per week.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required and schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities and may include some weekend work.
  • The working schedule will be changed during the Christmas campaign with addition of hours.
  • Required to follow precautionary measures, i.e., universal precautions (COVID precautions), required to wear safety shoes or boots, gloves, hard hat when applicable.
  • Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching, and reaching is required.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Completion of Secondary School.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
  • Some related experience in warehouse processing or goods distribution would be a definite asset.
  • Knowledge of lifting guidelines would be a definite asset.
  • Brand awareness would be a definite asset.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and provide an original copy of current driver’s abstract that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

  • Ability to be confidential & trustworthy as the incumbent is looking out for the interest of the Thrift Store and The Salvation Army.
  • Ability to follow The Salvation Army Standards, Policies and Procedures in the operation of a Thrift Store.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
