At LIHS we live and lead through our Core Values, it is a requirement to be familiar with these as we hire, review, develop and reward our people around them.Position OverviewAs the full time, permanent Family Support Worker, you will be responsible for providing connection and support to children/youth and their mothers who have been impacted by family violence. In this role you will promote each family’s strengths and goals through individualized support plans and services and support strong parent-child relationships through family engagement activities. As well, you will offer children/youth and mothers practical assistance with daily needs and routines, childcare, and programming. As the Family Support Worker, you are strongly committed to work that promotes the strengths and wellbeing of families and your strong time management, communication and teamwork skills ensure your success in this positive, dynamic, and demanding work environment.Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides mothers with individual support to identify strengths, needs and goals, create support plans and implement healthy parenting strategies that help their child to overcome the effects of family violence.
  • Provides supportive conversations and activities that strengthen children/youth to cope with the experience of family violence.
  • Promotes positive parent/child interaction through information, role modeling and positive options for guiding children’s behaviors.
  • Engages children/youth along with their mothers in activities that strengthen parent-child relationships.
  • Acts as an advocate on behalf of the families as needed. Makes referrals to appropriate community resources and assists mothers and their children to connect with these resources.
  • Supports families with their day-to-day routines, practical needs, and activities while at the Emergency Shelter/Dol Mar Manor.
  • Engages children/youth in activities and play that promote strengths, interests, and the wellbeing of each child.
  • Provides childcare options for mothers who are residents of the LIHS Shelter and Transitional Housing Program.
Experience and CompetenciesPost-secondary education and 2 years experience in a Human Services or Child Development field; accompanied with experience and/or education supporting vulnerable populations, children/youth and families would be considered an asset. An extensive knowledge in interpersonal violence, trauma-sensitive practices, knowledge of child development/behavior is a must. You must have a valid drivers license, clean drivers abstract, and a minimum of three years driving and insurance history.No phone calls please.
