Job Description

Principal, Partnerships, SagardAt Sagard we have built a value proposition that not only focuses on delivering superior financial returns but meaningful strategic business benefits to our investors and portfolio companies. The objectives of the Partnerships team are i) to help our investors deliver on their related business priorities and projects by facilitating portfolio company partnerships, delivering actionable insights on market trends and developments and otherwise being the go to resources for all their fintech related requests and questions; and ii) help drive game changing revenue growth opportunities for our portfolio companies by systematically leveraging the Sagard ecosystem and partnership model to create new business opportunities.To be clear, this is not an Investor Relations role. We work closely with the business, strategy, and technology heads of many of the leading financial services companies and fintechs in Canada, the US and Europe and provide advice, counsel and introductions that helps them see where their businesses need to go and provide some of the tools to help get them there.The right candidate for this position will play a central role in helping the Partnership team deliver on its objectives and in the process support the growth of both our investors and portfolio companies.Job Responsibilities

  • Investor and portfolio company engagement and relationship management (40%)
  • Work with investors to continuously understand their areas of focus, key projects and priorities and identify how we can support them through our Partnership and Insights programs
  • Build and maintain strong/mutually beneficial relationships with senior level leaders at both our investors organizations and portfolio companies
  • Meet with investors on a regular basis to provide fund and market updates, discuss on-going partnership opportunities and upcoming events
  • Regularly share insights and perspectives on market developments and key trends that are relevant to each of our individual investors
  • Act as strategic advisor to investors and portfolio companies on specific projects and initiatives
  • Act as a conduit between our investors and other parts of the Portage and Sagard ecosystem including the Investment team and our ecosystem partner Diagram Ventures
2. Strategic partnerships and business development (40%)
  • Support investors and portfolio companies across all stages of the partnership process from identifying partnership opportunities, facilitating discussions and where required, managing interactions up to the commercial launch of the partnership
  • Continuously identify and execute creative ways to connect investors, ecosystem partners and portfolio companies as well as investors to other investors where a partnership opportunity might be mutually beneficial
  • Identify and build new relationships with companies that are potential customers of our portfolio companies
  • Provide on-going advice on partnership best practices and share relevant experiences to help investors and portfolio companies manage their engagements
  • Provide on-going advice and counsel to portfolio companies on their pitches and product positioning to set them up for success in discussions with potential partners
  • Be well versed on the product and service value propositions of the relevant portfolio companies in order to help our investors understand why a partnership might be beneficial
  • Follow a systematic and rigorous process of tracking and reporting on partnership activity on a regular basis
3. Content development and delivery (20%)
  • Develop relevant and useful content that helps investors stay on top of current trends and accelerate their internal thinking and plans on related priorities and projects
  • Work closely with the Investment teams and other ecosystem partners, such as Diagram Ventures, to identify, develop and execute on the content strategy
  • Develop value added content such as thought leadership pieces, newsletters, resource guides and presentations for our investors and portfolio companies
  • Develop and execute virtual and in person events and workshops on specific topics of interest to our investors
What were looking for
  • 7+ years of experience in consulting, partnerships, corporate innovation and/or business development roles. Financial Services/Fintech experience is preferred but not required
  • Able to see both the big picture and help set strategy, while at the same time willing and able to develop and execute on the tactical steps, including tracking and reporting, to get there
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with a proven ability to take an idea from concept to execution
  • Eager to always be learning about the latest trends and market developments that drive the investments we make as a firm and able to clearly, concisely and creatively communicate those insights with partners verbally, in writing or ppt/Slides
  • Enthusiastic about helping companies succeed and able to help them find business development opportunities both in and out of their networks
  • Comfortable engaging with and presenting to senior executives on a regular basis
  • Fully bilingual and capable of speaking, writing and reading in French and English fluently is a definite plus
