Job Description

Genome Canada’s new Vice-President of Research and Innovation will have the exciting opportunity to lead the design and execution of research programs, challenges and initiatives for Genome Canada and across the Genome Enterprise.Reporting to the President and as a member of the Senior Management Team (SMT), this position will support the development and implementation of Genome Canada’s vision, mission, strategy, and objectives.Guided by five core values outlined in Genome Canada’s Playbook, our staff strive to be relentlessly impact-focused, purposeful partners, effortlessly agile and seriously smart.   • Alongside the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO), provide scientific leadership for the development of a forward-looking science and innovation agenda.
  • Lead the Genomics Research and Innovation Programs (GRIP) team ensuring resources are allocated effectively to deliver on objectives, fostering the development of team members, and supporting a strong team culture aligned with corporate values.
  • Provide Programs leadership in the development and delivery of challenges and programs, mission opportunities and funding proposals.
  • Develop national and international networks in academic, public and industrial research sectors to support Genome Canada’s strategic objectives.
  • Support communications, policy and public affairs activities by representing Genome Canada in external meetings, advisory committees and related initiatives.
  • Work across the Genomic Enterprise to coordinate and align regional and national research priorities.
  • Maintain expertise across genomics sectors (health and non-health), staying current with new ‘omics’ research and applications, broader life sciences developments, and other related technologies (particularly artificial intelligence and quantum) to be an influencer and expert adviser in scientific affairs, both nationally and internationally.
  • Demonstrate commitment to principles related to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility and to Indigenous engagement in our missions and other activities.
Qualifications
  • Graduate-level research-based degree (PhD preferred) in a relevant area, ideally in genomics or related life sciences field, with expertise providing research guidance and oversight.
  • Industry experience is strongly desired and familiarity with Canadian academic research is essential.
  • Experience in research administration, and in the development of complicated, multi-party research programs.
  • Senior leadership and management experience, including experience in strategic planning, governance, and corporate objective-setting.
  • Experience in building and implementing impactful strategic partnerships with other organizations, including funding organizations.
  • Knowledge of and experience with Canadian and international research funding organizations and mechanisms.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential in English. The same in French is a significant asset.
