As a leader in Distributed Computing Services (DCS), you will be part of a dedicated team of energetic, forward-thinking people and this role will certainly stretch your operations capabilities on the Mainframe, Storage and Technology Recovery platforms.About the teamThe Mainframe Hosting, Storage Services, & Technology Recovery teams are dedicated to providing the services and technology our business partners need to continue to operate and innovate for our clients and help them achieve key business goals. Through innovation and collaboration, were striving to continually find new and better ways to bring value to Sun Life.About the roleTechnology leadership supporting Mainframe Hosting, Storage Services, & Technology Recovery activities in support of targeted business outcomes is fundamental to this role.The successful candidate for this role brings motivation, creativity, proven leadership and expertise executing on enterprise class solutions. Reporting directly to the VP, Distributed Computing Services, this role provides the leadership, facilitation, analysis and design tasks required for the operational execution of Sun Life’s key infrastructure technology platforms. You will create deliverables that help develop advance the technical infrastructure across the Storage, Mainframe, and Technology Recovery services to enable business strategies.What will you doThis role will also be responsible for the following:

  • Lead a team of Directors, each of which will have design, development, implementation and operational support of their respective technologies, processes, and accountabilities.
  • Lead the analysis of the current technology environment to identify potential opportunities and recommend solutions for improvement, including industry insights.
  • Partner with all groups within DCS and the CTO groups in order to continue to foster relationships and a collaborative environment.
  • Bring enthusiasm to drive innovation by leveraging new technologies and approaches to renovate, extend and shift the existing technical environment.
  • Drive the research, evaluation and selection of hardware and software technology and product standards. Includes identifying the organizational impact of the technology you will be responsible for.
  • Managing people, Directors and staff: build succession and development plans; conduct regular performance reviews and ensure training remains a priority for all staff including people leaders.
  • Lead the development of a strategic technology roadmap, incorporating strategic plans for the business with the technology trends and directions, and the macro understanding of the Storage, Mainframe, and Technology Recovery services industry.
  • Facilitate the delivery of new technologies through internal review committees, including: ASGP (Architecture Stage Gate Process, ALC (Architecture Leadership Council) and ETRB (Enterprise Technical Review Board) to ensure alignment with roadmaps.
  • Building on this strategy, this role is accountable for identifying solution options for all key projects, working closely with (peer) Infrastructure leaders to select the best option.
What do you need to succeed
  • Successful completion of a Masters or Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, IT Management or related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years solution architecture experience, with a particular focus in Infrastructure.
  • Deep knowledge of the following technical disciplines: Storage, Mainframe, Disaster Recovery, infrastructure and operations, as well as security architecture.
  • Strong understanding of financial models and budgeting.
  • Contract Management experience is also desired.
What experience you’ll need:This role requires a deep technology knowledge and experience across the infrastructure technology suite. Ideally financial services industry business knowledge will have been acquired through heavy involvement in a series of large projects over a number of years. The technology knowledge requires a career spent in IT, focused in infrastructure, cloud and/or DevOps processes.Additionally, this role requires comprehensive knowledge of following:
  • Technology Industry - vendors, solutions, emerging technology.
  • Technology solutions within in insurance, banking, asset management.
  • Ability to quickly understand and connect with Sun Life’s business strategies.
What you’re great at:
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to effectively engage VP and C level stakeholders.
  • Ability to liaise with internal and external stakeholders and adapt approach when dealing with technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Organizationally savvy, with the ability to navigate through a complex matrix environment, problem solving and clearly visioning future state architecture in a quickly changing environment.
  • Understanding technology trends and the practical application of existing, new and emerging technologies to enable new and evolving business and operating models.
  • Working knowledge of Agile and DevOps tooling is desired.
  • Ability to balance the long-term and short-term implications of individual decisions.
  • Engaging teams of shared service individuals from across Sun Life.
  • Executing a strong level of influence to ensure technology strategies are understood and adopted to align with business strategy.
  • Joint strategy development with cross DCS, CTO, IT and business leaders.
  • Engaging IT and Business leaders to drive innovative, shared solutions.
  • Managing and directing high performance individuals.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance.
