Job Description

About TRCA:With more than 60 years of experience, Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) is one of 36 Conservation Authorities in Ontario, created to safeguard and enhance the health and well-being of watershed communities through the protection and restoration of the natural environment and the ecological services the environment provides.TRCA works to protect the integrity and health of the rivers and creeks in the jurisdiction, develop a system of green and natural spaces that sustains local ecosystems, and advance sustainable practices that improve people’s lives within our growing region.How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:The Actor Education Interpreter educates and entertains visitors to Black Creek Pioneer Village (BCPV) by performing educational and 19th century theatrical pieces that share the story of the Toronto region. The Actor Education Interpreter works with the Supervisor, Historic Programs in researching and writing scripts for performances from time to time. The Actor Education Interpreter delivers other cultural heritage programs as required. The Actor Education Interpreter also plays an active role in customer experience ensuring all visitors have a positive experience at BCPV.Major Responsibilities:Perform the following tasks under general supervision:

  • Entertains and educates visitors to BCPV by performing educational and 19th century theatrical pieces to tell the story of the Toronto region.
  • Delivers museum theatre programs and cultural heritage programs for a variety of audiences
  • Learns program content, including lines and actions to support performance of programs.
  • Leads cultural heritage programs.
  • Ensures program items are well maintained and appropriately stored and maintained. Assists with creation of props from time to time.
  • Provides support to the Supervisor in program development, and script writing from time to time, by researching and sharing knowledge of the content.
  • Assists Curator, from time to time, with basic collections management care through proper handling and cleaning of artifacts.
  • Delivers programs at offsite locations (libraries, community fairs, etc.) as needed, ensuring that all supplies are transported and returned appropriately.
  • Follows all safety procedures and guidelines for working with tools, near animals, etc. as outlined in TRCA Safety Procedures.
What will you need to succeed:Education (degree/diploma/certifications)
  • Actively pursuing or possess a post-secondary degree/diploma in a related field.
Experience
  • 2 years experience in acting/performance.
  • Experience working with large groups in delivering programs and activities is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience with creative writing/playwriting is considered an asset.
Knowledge/Skill/Ability
  • Strong acting skills including versatility in character portrayal and styles of performance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Knowledge of 19th century Canadian social history.
  • Knowledge of 19th century theatrical styles.
  • Ability to work independently and take initiative within a set of guidelines and procedures, and to take direction and notes when given.
  • Strong public speaking and communication skills.
  • Strong customer service skills.
  • Willingness to wear historically accurate and complete 19th century clothing and hairstyles.
  • Skills in playwriting, directing, storytelling, and/or singing an asset
  • Successful clearance of the Vulnerable Sector Screening is required.
