What can I expect to do in this role

• Assist ministry inspectors with workplace inspections to provide advice and consultation in regards to compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations for the control of infections.
• Develop and implement strategies to ensure optimal health and safety performance in the workplaces
• Analyze and develop comprehensive compliance and enforcement strategies and products
• Provide expertise, interpretation, advice, and guidance to field staff, management, senior management and stakeholders
• Provide direction and make recommendations to programs to mitigate risks and ensure compliance with legislation and other protocols and standards as applicable.
• Provide expertise for the development of best practice guidelines and ministry policies concerning infection control, health care programs and other initiatives

How do I qualifyMandatoryYou have Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (E.g. Certification in Infection Control (CIC)) or be qualified through education and experience towards fulfilment of CIC designation. (This certification requires an educational background (post-secondary) in a health related field and least 1 year full time (2 years part-time) work experience with direct responsibility for infection prevention and control.Knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control and Legislation

• You maintain up-to-date knowledge of infection prevention and control practices and new developments and trends.
• You can interpret and apply relevant legislation (e.g. Occupational Health and Safety Act, Health Protection and Promotion Act, Ontario Public Health Standards, Public Hospitals Act, Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act, etc.), regulations, and government infection control related policies, standards and other guidelines for a variety of workplace sectors.

Specialized Knowledge

• You have knowledge of occupational health and safety and infection prevention and control principles, risk management theory and risk assessment principles.
• You have knowledge of recommendations for communicable diseases, worker exposures, and emergency preparedness.
• You have knowledge of epidemiology and accepted theories, methods, best practices and protocols in order to provide authoritative leadership, consultation and expertise in all infections and their prevention, control, and management in the workplace

Policy Development Knowledge

• You can understand policy and program development principles/techniques including government policy development and approval processes to lead policy development projects and develop policy options.

Research, Analytical and Evaluation Skills

• You have demonstrated research, evaluation, analytical and problem-solving skills and ability to conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses to assess, analyze, and interpret surveillance and epidemiological data, evaluate infection prevention and control programs for all sector workplaces, and to identify issues and make recommendations to address them.

Communication, Negotiation, Consultation and Interpersonal Skills

• You possess effective oral and written communication and presentation skills to explain complex health and safety matters to stakeholders, represent the ministry on committees/task forces, prepare technical reports, recommendations, correspondence and other materials.
• You have negotiation, conflict resolution and leadership skills to lead consultations and reconcile different viewpoints/ positions with clients/stakeholders.
• You have advisory, facilitation and interpersonal skills to develop effective working relationships and provide advice to stakeholders and partners on complex issues.
