Job Description

Do you have knowledge and skills in crisis response and intervention Do you want to make a difference in your community If so, consider this unique opportunity with the Ministry of the Attorney General, Special Investigations Unit (SIU). As a team member of the Affected Persons Program, you will provide information, support, and guidance to persons involved in the investigative process by assessing both their needs and the needs of their families, and by providing referral services, including emotional support, crisis intervention and information during their involvement in the Special Investigation Units investigative process.We are currently seeking an Affected Persons Worker for the EAST REGION. This position will be responsible for responding to service calls and required to travel to scene locations within East Region.East Region includes Kingston, Ottawa, Cornwall, Belleville, Pembroke, and Renfrew. Occasional travel outside East region may also be required.NOTE:

  • This position requires you to work on an on-call basis. The hours of work are 0 to 36.25 hours per week, including weekends and statutory holidays, based on operational requirements and with no guaranteed hours.
  • You must be available for a call for service 24 hours per day, 7 days per week

  • Provide short-term emotional support and practical assistance to the affected persons present at the scene and deliver next-of-kin death notifications
  • Discuss safety concerns and options with affected persons
  • Provide emotional support, and crisis intervention to affected persons, complete accurate and up-to-date documentation for tracking and statistical purposes
  • Assess needs, abilities and resources of clients to determine requirements and recommend appropriate services
  • Follow up with clients, as needed
  • Provide support, information and guidance throughout the court (if charges are warranted) and inquest processes
  • Travel to scene location to support the affected persons
How do I qualifyMandatory:
  • Valid G drivers license
  • Ability to be available for a call for service 24 hours per day, 7 days per week

  • You have understanding of criminal justice and court system in Ontario (i.e. complaints, victims of crime, sexual assault, homicide, death related cases, etc.) in order to support and provide guidance to clients throughout the investigative and legal processes
  • You have knowledge of risk assessment and safety planning in order to assist clients to identify safety concerns and develop plans to access appropriate services
  • You have knowledge of community agencies and services make referrals for clients and build effective partnerships and networks
  • You have knowledge of and ability to comply with the Freedom of Information and Protection of Personal Privacy Act
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills
  • You are able to assess clients unique needs and immediate risks as well as determine appropriate response/plan
  • You are able to recommend resolutions for contentious issues to the Investigative Supervisor
  • You can examine areas for service improvements or implement new or enhanced services
  • You have knowledge of relevant legislation and ability to apply organizational policies and procedures in order to provide services to clients
Communication, Consultation, and Interpersonal Skills
  • You have knowledge of crisis response and intervention in order to respond appropriately to clients in crisis or have been traumatized
  • You are able to work effectively with community agencies, court administration, Crown Counsel, and other stakeholders
  • You can make recommendations to the Crown based on observations/information provided by clients
  • You are able to provide information to clients as well as testify in court
  • You have written communication and presentation skills to write reports, correspondence and case file summaries, and prepare presentations for public speaking engagements
Organizational, Planning, and Case Management Skills
  • You are able to manage a large caseload independently as well as prioritize work in an environment of multiple demanding deadlines
Computer Skills
  • You can develop correspondence, reports, databases and presentations
