Please reach out to us to learn more!This is a posting for both onshift positions in the Control Room and offshift positions in Operating Planning.Responsibilities:PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Will perform duties as necessary to operate the electricity distribution system and associated apparatus using a range of electrical operating
  • skills and knowledge. The Distribution System is defined as the power system between the transmission system and the end-use customer. The
  • Distribution System is not defined by a specific voltage, but rather as performing the distribution function at any voltage.
Examples of this are listed below:
  • Monitor, operate, restore assets and assigned anomalies as required on the Distribution System, on a 24-hour 7 day basis.
  • Assess and respond to the impact on the Distribution System by the deployment of transmission elements.
  • Work in collaboration with and prioritize direction from the Transmission System Operator (TSO) as required in response to planned and unplanned system events to ensure transmission system reliability (e.g. Carry out Manual Block and Rotational Load Shedding).
  • Determine condition and recommend on availability of equipment in conjunction with the Transmission System Operator (TSO).
  • Monitor, approve, direct and report Low Voltage Load Transfers with the TSO as required.
  • Determine condition and recommend availability of DO controlled assets.
  • Monitor, respond to and operate assets connected to the Distribution System not under controlling authority of DO as required.
  • Monitor asset communication links to the Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS).
  • Perform load studies generation assessments and/or apply protection settings as required for any planned or unplanned events.
  • Respond to and manage planned and unplanned distribution bi- directional power flow.
  • Respond to and manage local distribution energy networks and micro grids.
  • Respond to and manage real-time data from connected devices to determine grid state for improved operational planning, protection, control, and optimization.
  • Respond to and manage interoperable and integrated operations between legacy and new and emerging systems and applications.
  • Respond to and manage distribution grid operations variability in both generation and load assets.
  • Utilize technologies such as monitoring sensors, communications, automation and computers to manage the flexibility, reliability, restoration and efficiency of the Distribution System.
  • Respond to and manage impacts of Distributed Energy Resources (DER1), Energy Storage Systems (ESS2) and Demand Side Management (DSM3) to the Distribution System.
  • Troubleshoot, sectionalize, balance and maintain Distribution System operability and restoration utilizing prescribed tools.
  • Initiate actions from work authorities or customers to respond to Distribution System events as required.
  • Dispatch, direct and monitor location of designated personnel on a 24- hour 7 day basis in the operation and restoration of the Distribution System.
  • Prioritize trouble calls and relay information to stakeholders in the management and restoration of the Distribution System.
  • Respond to contingencies, restore facilities, dispatch resources and recommend priority response and repair as required.
  • Respond to and/or notify effectively internal/external customers and stakeholders as required.
  • Effectively relay information to stakeholders on a priority basis upon the availability and proximity of crews.
  • Assist stakeholders by contacting appropriate resource people with regards to system/equipment malfunctions.
  • Monitor and respond to Emergency Monitoring Services in accordance with internal customer agreements, policies and procedures (e.g. Helicopter Monitoring and Personal Emergency Response Systems.
  • Check statistical computations ensuring current statistics are maintained and consistent with the changes in the event data as provided by interfacing informational data sources (e.g. OMS, GIS, AMI).
  • Input, monitor, update, verify, extract data and provide input to reports utilizing assigned applications ensuring that accuracy and timeliness are maintained.
  • Integrate and execute planned and unplanned outages into outage management programs and provide final outage approval for all
  • Distribution System assets as required.
  • Respond to and identify planned or unplanned service interruptions and notify customers individually or through the use of Interactive VoiceResponse (IVR) or other computerized systems.
  • Recommend priority of response to all emergencies or incidents, and implement emergency procedures as per applicable emergency response planning.
  • Administer the Utility Work Protection Code as required.
  • Maintain an operating log.
  • Provide operational expertise to all departments.
  • Respond to Emergency Distribution Underground Cable locates as required.
  • Monitor and respond to system outage management tools and services to notify stakeholders and service providers of forecasted weather impacts to the Distribution System.
  • When assigned, provide duties as assigned in the ‘mentoring program’. Volunteers will be sought prior to assigning employees.
  • Provide direction to, collaborate with and share knowledge and expertise with trainees to assist in their development including on the job training.
  • Provide input into the Distribution Operator Training programs as necessary.
  • Assist and provide technical assistance in the development of policies, procedures, operating agreements improved processes, etc.
  • Identify problems, issues and opportunities for improvement/corrective actions.
  • Refer more complex technical problems or issues associated with corporate policies, procedures or interpretation to Supervisor/Manager.
  • Actively participate in investigations, enquiries and reviews as required.
  • Perform step-up into the Distribution Operator Supervisor role as required.
  • Perform other duties as required for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of the Distribution System.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
  • Operate required computer tools (i.e. ADMS, etc.) associated with all aspects the Distribution Operating System and duties of the Distribution Operator role
  • Utilize databases related to system programs (OMS, AMI, Arc FM, CAD, etc.) as required to record, update and report statistical information
  • Utilizing standalone computer programs, input, update and extract data to produce reports as required and/or scheduled
  • Operate office equipment (photocopiers, scanners, fax machines, phone systems, radio systems, etc.)
Selection Criteria:EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Requires the knowledge that is acquired by a post-secondary (3 year) electrical technologist diploma or OACETT electrical technologist accreditation or 2 year electrical technician diploma plus other relevant electrical system related experience/qualification/licenses/accreditations.
  • Must have completed the Hydro One System Control Distribution Operator Training Program or equivalent.
  • Attain and maintain future regulatory required certifications or changes to operate the Distribution System and/or any new or additional requirements as deemed necessary to perform the role.
