Job Description

Position: Health & Wellness Communications SupportProgram or Team: BANAC – Organization WideLocation: Orillia (Orillia BANAC Facilities)Supervisor: TBDTerm: 1.00 FTE to March 31, 2023Salary: $52,000.00Closing: December 1, 2022About the Organization:The Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle (BANAC) is a regional social planning and development organization which provides innovative programs and service to Indigenous communities in Simcoe County, Muskoka, and York Region, including wholistic Health Services through the Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Primary Care Team. As an Interprofessional Health Care Team, Mamaway team members provide primary care, mental health, traditional healing and health promotion services for Indigenous communities. We provide wholistic services in clinic locations, community and in partnership with mainstream service partners.ROLE DESCRIPTION:The Health & Wellness Communications Support is responsible for the creation and delivery of health messaging using social media, radio, web-based opportunities to support informative messaging to Indigenous community members to create awareness of strategies to manage colds/flu and covid. This includes ensuring that the most up to date information from approved sources (public health unit, Ontario Health, Health Canada) are used to create messaging to support and motivate Indigenous community members and to direct to available resources to support wellness. The Health & Wellness Communications Support will work with the BANAC Communications Coordinator to provide operational support to BANAC by developing communications and information deliverables including: social media posts, flyers and promotional materials, common messaging, news and media relation deliverablesThis role supports and works collaboratively with organizational team members and communities to develop and implement targeted communication strategies that address health and wellness.ROLE RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Monitor the agency’s social media and online presence; serve as the logistic and administrative coordinator for BANAC website and Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin website for Cold/Flu/COVID information
  • Provide support to all BANAC team members in the areas of communication, public education, and information dissemination for health-related strategies
  • Disseminates print and digital marketing materials
  • Supports media documentation: media consents, digital consents, photo consents and similar; provides support to BANAC teams to follow policies.
  • Write content for both print and digital media that supports common messaging for health and wellness needs on the organization’s public facing digital channels, website, brochures, and email communications
  • Coordinate meetings, planning sessions, and presentations as requested by the BANAC Communications Coordinator
WHAT YOU BRING:The ideal candidate will be a skilled, digital-savvy communicator with strong attention to detail and organizational skills, a positive attitude that respects Indigenous knowledge and who is at ease balancing competing priorities and multiple on-going projects.
  • Experience working with Indigenous peoples and communities
  • A minimum of one to three years’ experience in communications
  • Experience in developing products across a variety of formats
  • Sound knowledge of social media applications and principles
  • Superior organizational skills with ability to work independently and in a team
  • Sound knowledge of Indigenous history, culture and communities
  • Ability to work in a manner that exemplifies the core values of compassion, respect, accountability, excellence and safety.

  • Work is typically performed in clinic, office and community settings.
  • Regular travel to meetings and communities, will be required – vehicle an asset
  • Regular overtime work may be required from time to time, BANAC team members enjoy a flex schedule agreement
  • Periodic exposure to smoke may occur from the burning of sacred medicines: Tobacco, sweet grass, sage or cedar.
Specific employment conditions are specified in an employment contract with BANAC and include the following:
  • Worksite location
  • Valid C.P.R. and A.E.D. Certificates required
  • Valid Class G Ontario Driver’s License is required with clear check for vulnerable sector
