Job Description

The Jack Purcell Recreation Association seeks counsellors for its After School Program, which operates from September to June throughout the school year from 2:30-5:30pm at Jack Purcell Community Centre. We provide after-school care for children in grades 1 through 6 from Elgin Street Public School. The program offers many different activities for children to participate in including swimming, arts and crafts, gym games, sports, drama games, outdoor time and more. A successful candidate’s primary responsibilities are to supervise children and to ensure that they take part in the daily, planned program activities in a safe and secure environment. Note that due to the nature of the pandemic, we have adapted policies and procedures in order to keep everyone as safe as possible.We run the program at Jack Purcell Community Centre, Monday to Friday from 2:30-5:30 p.m. We are looking for counsellors able to work at least 2 days a week, and up to 5 days a week, if available. Candidates must be able to work Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Specific duties include:

  • Implementing and leading daily activities planned by the Supervisor (this includes both high energy and low energy activities, time outdoors, swimming, etc.).
  • Adhering to safe policies and procedures outlined by the association
  • Establishing and maintaining open communication with coworkers, children and parents.
  • Education in children’s studies and previous experience working in a children’s program or camp are both considered assets.
  • Must have First Aid and CPR certification (if it has expired during the pandemic, that expiration date has been extended until December 2021).
  • Must provide proof of police record check in the vulnerable sector or undergo one when hired.
  • Must attend an interview with the ASP Supervisor and/or the JPRA Executive Director.
