CBC/Radio-Canada is committed to reflecting Canada’s diversity in its workforce, as well as across all of its platforms.CBC Ottawa is looking for a creative, innovative and imaginative journalist for a new role as associate producer for the expanding content diversification and creator network unit.This position is unique in Ottawa’s newsroom. Reporting to the producer of this unit, you will work to pull together compelling, original digital content that pushes the boundaries of our storytelling, focussing on diverse voices and experiences, told in innovative ways, ranging from first-person written pieces to photography to video and everything in between (with an eye to sharing these stories on other broadcast platforms and social media). You will also help to create and mentor a community of content creators, finding a home for their diverse perspectives at CBC Ottawa.Your strengths are both in imaginative storytelling and developing relationships with potential sources, audience members and freelancers to find perspectives and develop projects that are firmly rooted in this community but that are also surprising to our audience.Strong journalism, storytelling and relationship-building skills are needed, as well as an ability to write and edit. Video skills are an asset, but an interest in learning new ways of video storytelling is more important, alongside a genuine interest in exploring digital storytelling tools. An interest in mentoring and interacting with those outside the CBC is key, as well as a strong ability to communicate and share your work internally. An independent-thinker who can juggle multiple projects on multiple timelines is essential.As the primary associate producer for this unit, you will pitch original ideas that connect with the community as well as innovative treatments that help stories resonate with diverse audiences. You will assist in developing digital content including researching, writing, editing, organizing shoots and reviewing freelancer work as needed. You will work both on your own projects, and help produce others’ work for publication/broadcast.There is a requirement to develop meaningful stories and contacts as well as ensure a diversity of voices and perspectives in all treatments. Work must adhere to CBC journalistic and/or show policies, practices and standards, but initiative and independent judgment are required.Key Tasks:Contributes ideas for content and suggestions for treatment of original, compelling and people-focused stories in Ottawa.Develops and maintains contacts in a range of diverse communities around the region.Seeks out and connects with content creators and emerging talent from diverse and digital communities.Develops relationships with creators new to CBC, mentoring them and creating a sense of belonging for them within the CBC.Assists in developing content including writing, researching, editing, preparing questioning, setting up shoots, developing the writing or ideas of othersWrites and posts, as required, a variety of digital content including social mediaPotential to gather visual material including video and photographs to enhance digital, print, and social media platforms as required.Adheres to the Journalistic Standards and Practices of the CBC.Some familiarity with media agreements, Business & Rights, budgets.Supports creative storytelling on multiple platforms.Manages multiple projects on different timelinesCommunicates and collaborates effectively across multiple departmentsGenerally works to expand the range of non-news content by Ottawa creators and for an Ottawa audienceActs as a CBC ambassador in Ottawa’s production and creative communities.We are looking for a candidate with the following:University degree or equivalent.Three years’ practical and relevant experience.An understanding of local journalism, and the tools needed to produce it.A strong sense of journalistic storytelling with an awareness of contemporary political, economic, cultural and social issues of importance to this community, paired with a good understanding of the needs of the Ottawa audience.A deep understanding and appreciation of diversity of perspective, opinion and experience and the ability to tell stories from those perspectives.Must have strong creative judgement, initiative and a high degree of responsibility for the quality of work throughout the complete production cycle.Strong visual storytelling skills and experience giving stories different visual treatments, as well as an interest in exploring video storytelling.Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, creative and original story ideas and treatments.Ability to seek out new voices and freelancers and develop relationships with audience members and potential collaborators.Knowledge of the digital space and trends as well as social media.A demonstrated connection to diverse communities within the Ottawa area as well as a commitment to producing journalism for audiences that are often underserved and/or underrepresented.Excellent communication, interpersonal and outreach skills .Excellent writing and editing skills.Strong team player but an independent thinker.Able to keep track of a number of simultaneous activities and prioritize and plan.Strong critical and thinking skills (familiarity with CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices is essential).Ability to give effective feedback and coach emerging content creators.This is an English-language position.
