We make our work meaningful for our community by striving to ensure that our team reflect the community we serveJob SummaryThe Community Development Facilitator coordinates the Equity for Us initiative. Equity for Us seeks to increase social cohesion and inclusion through engaging diverse residents of our neighbourhood and participants of our community health centre programs in visioning and creating a community-based action plan to combat racism and discrimination.The Community Development Facilitator will be responsible for outreach and engagement of participants and volunteer co-facilitators, designing/planning/coordinating/promoting community workshops/dialogues, collecting data for project evaluation, development of a community anti-racism action plan/work plan and report, assisting in engaging community stakeholders, coordinating a final wrap up event and creating infographics for social media and websites to make initiative outcomes accessible to community members.A strong commitment to and passion in dismantling racism and oppression is essential to this role. The successful candidate must possess and showcase a comprehensive understanding of racism, oppression, anti-racist theories and principles, equity and social justice.Due to the nature of the role, preference will be given to individuals who self-identify as a member of a diverse community.AccountabilityThe Community Development Facilitator is directly accountable to the Community Health Promoter and will work closely with other members of the Centre as required.Qualifications

  • High school diploma, or post-secondary degree from a recognized university or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience in coordination and facilitation of community workshops
  • Experience in design, development and delivery of community engagement and community development projects
  • Experience working with individuals from differing social and cultural backgrounds
  • Minimum two years experience in a community based setting
  • Significant experience working with marginalized populations
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of and action in anti-racism philosophies and strategies
  • Strong community outreach and engagement skills
  • Ability to use capacity-building and skills-building approach in working with community members
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Sound judgement
  • Excellent communication/interpersonal skills
  • Ability to be innovative with limited resources
  • Ability to offer support to peers, volunteers and students
  • Knowledge of issues and challenges facing low income, vulnerable and diverse communities
  • A strong knowledge base of community development principles
  • Clear understanding of issues of poverty, and cultural sensitivity
  • Strong ability to work as a team member
  • Strong ability to work independently and develop own work structure
  • Ability to work flexible hours, evenings and weekends (as per community member availability)
  • Advanced computer and internet skills
Language Capability
  • English essential, French is an asset
  • Other language(s) a strong asset (particularly Mandarin, Cantonese and Vietnamese)
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Recruit, engage and support volunteer co-facilitators
  • Outreach, recruit, engage and support community members and workshop participants
  • Engage relevant community based partners and stakeholders
  • Design promotional material
  • Engage grassroots community and awareness of social justice initiatives in the city
Workshop Design and Event Planning
  • Design and implement community-based workshops
  • Lead in planning and promotion of quarterly National virtual events,on various topical themes of racism, oppression, anti-racist theories and principles, equity and social justice
  • Lead all aspects of event virtual event & workshop planning meeting deadlines and budget demands
Project management
  • Working with the Community Health Promoter, collect data for evaluation of project, and assist in the preparation of funder reports
  • Develop data collection and reporting tools
  • Working with Community Health Promoter in creating and managing forecasts and budget for project, within an approved budget framework
GENERAL EMPLOYEE RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Contributes to the Centre’s activities to collect, analyse and report on data and relevant information and participate in research,
  • Preserves confidentiality of all client and employee information and seeks to minimize risk while working with data,
  • Submits records of time worked and time off in a timely manner,
  • Maintains and develops professional competence, and where applicable, a professional licence to practice, through appropriate continuing education methods (e.g. peer interaction, literature review, conferences, courses, staff development leave, etc.),
  • Complies and adheres to all applicable Centre policies and procedures,
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Respects and values the diversity of the community and individuals
  • Supports the Centre’s student placement programs
  • Contributes to the Centre’s work by participation in activities that seek to strengthen collaborative and interdisciplinary teamwork, such as internal committees and working groups, strategic planning and accreditation.
  • Contributes to the Centre’s practices of hiring, orienting and training of employees
  • Participates actively in team meetings
  • Consults with and provides support to team members and other SWCHC employees regarding professional issues
  • Participates in the Centre’s strategic planning process
  • Participates in the development of policies and procedures by providing feedback in the Centre’s policy development process
  • Works in a manner that incorporates health promotion and recognizes the determinants of health
  • Participates in team and individual professional development opportunities
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETYThe Community Engagement Facilitator must also work within the scope of all legislative and Centre policies related to occupational health and safety. In this capacity, the employee:
    • Must read and follow the Centre’s occupational health and safety policies.
    • Must have an OH&S Review at the beginning of their employment.
    • Must participate in any mandatory training the Centre provides including Worker or Supervisor Safety Awareness Training and WHMIS Training.
    • Must complete the AODA training
    • Must participate in Non Violence Crisis Intervention Training.
