Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:Reporting to the Director of Health & Counselling Services, the incumbent assesses clientspsychological and emotional development; plans and implements therapeutic interventions;participates in the ongoing evaluation of counselling service delivery. The incumbent isresponsible to provide quality health care to the Carleton University community in accordancewith the policies, goals and objectives of Health & Counselling Services.Qualifications:The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Previous or current experience providing psychotherapy to individuals with a broad range of individuals with diagnosed and undiagnosed mental health issues.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to develop a therapeutic relationship with the student.
  • Sensitivity and an unbiased approach is critical.
  • Capable of working independently but also has experience working in a shared care model.
  • Understanding of the developmental stage of this age group and the unique stresses experienced by students in post-secondary education.
  • Excellent time management skills - important to stay on time with appointments.
  • Flexible and able to respond to unscheduled urgent situations.
  • Recognizes limitations, knows when to consult and seeks supervision when appropriate.
  • Knowledge of key principles of program development, group facilitation and learning including prior experience in this area. Sound comprehension of pedagogical principles and how to integrate them into program development and delivery.
  • Understand of key mental health issues and trends impacting students in residence.
  • Desire to address issues proactively through the development and implementation of educational program and training.
Education and Experience:The above is normally acquired through the completion of:
  • Masters degree in Social Work or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Current valid registration with Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Worker or College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario
  • Five years working as a counsellor and psychotherapist, including two years’ experience in program development and group facilitation.
  • Experience in a university or college setting is required.
