Job Description

Canadian Bank Note Company develops, deploys and supports complex, secure solutions for currency, border security, identification, excise and lottery operations around the world. As a Database Administrator at CBN, you will have the opportunity to broaden your skill set as you work to support our custom applications that are deployed across countries and governments throughout North America, the Caribbean and South America. You may have the opportunity to travel to some of these locations occasionally, to provide on-site administrative support or to work on system upgrades of Oracle and PostgreSQL databases in a Linux o/s environment. So, if you are passionate about what you do, love being exposed to and learning about new technologies, and want a job where you can make a real contribution to society, please read on!Success in the role will be driven by your ability to function effectively as part of a team in a fast-paced environment. Our applications are mission-critical to our clients, and system down-time can have a severe impact upon the end-user. The ability to work collaboratively within the team, and manage the stress of meeting service level objectives, while minimizing system downtime, is essential. It also requires that you be a rational, clear thinker with fantastic troubleshooting skills.Apart from interacting with various internal departments (Software Development, Customer Support, Business Development, etc.), you will also be in touch with our customers on a regular basis. It is imperative that you have outstanding interpersonal and communication skills and are able to tailor your communication (oral and written) to audiences with both technical and non-technical backgrounds. The ability to do so in French and/or Spanish, in addition to English, is an asset. Our applications are unique, and your first few months will be spent simply learning about CBN systems and technologies. A willingness to listen and learn from your fellow DBAs will speed your time to productivity, so you can:

  • Install, configure and patch databases. Develop scripts for database changes associated with new software releases for customer systems.
  • Monitor and triage system alerts generated by automated monitoring.
  • Troubleshoot incidents related to application data flow or system issues (storage, capacity, performance, security, etc.). Perform root-cause analysis and develop and deploy corrective actions that address the issue, escalating to senior DBAs as required.
  • Monitor database and application performance and identify bottlenecks. Analyze and tune the databases to optimize performance. Monitor database storage and capacity, and develop plans to accommodate anticipated future growth.
  • Perform system (hardware and software) upgrades that include database version updates and application changes, in response to customer change requests and contract renewals.
  • Develop, implement and test disaster recovery procedures for customer systems.
  • Perform ad-hoc data-driven statistical reporting for customers and internal stakeholders (Business Development, Marketing, Manufacturing, etc.) as requested.
  • Create and maintain documentation pertaining to all database related procedures and actions.
While our ideal candidate possesses a post-secondary education in Computer Science/Engineering or related field and 5+ years of experience developing and/or administering Oracle or PostgreSQL database systems in a Linux o/s environment, we are also very much open to considering more junior candidates, who possess less experience, but can impress us with their technical understanding of databases and their desire to learn and grow. A commitment to customer service and a willingness to be on call (on a rotational basis) is mandatory, as is eligibility for Government of Canada Secret (Level II) clearance. As an Equal Opportunity Employer, Canadian Bank Note Company, Limited is committed to achieving a skilled and diversified workforce that reflects the diversity of the Canadian population.
