Job Description

We are seeking qualified Early Years Program Workers (EYPW) to work as a member of our Early Years team. The EYPW may work within the Headstart Nursery School and/or the EarlyON team. The EYPW will support healthy child development and healthy parent/caregivers – child relationships.The EYPW will deliver programs that align with provincial guidelines and best practices for Early Years programming as described in the How Does Learning Happen Framework, as well as the Childcare and Early Years Act 2014, and meet all health and safety standards.Headstart Context – Under COVID19 directives

  • Works with the Headstart teachers to supervise children and deliver program content in a stimulating learning environment for groups of pre-schoolers, in accordance with How Does Learning Happen CCEYA, and all other mandated directives.
  • Participates in all activities and transitions to ensure smooth running of the program, including circle time, mealtime, nap time routines (setting up, cleaning up tables, putting away dishes, sweeping floors, setting up and putting away cots and supervising children during nap time).
  • Works with the Headstart team to ensures quality and safety standards for the Nursery School program.
  • Works within the team to manage and guide children’s behaviours as needed in a manner that support children’s emotional and mental health.
EarlyON Centre context – Under COVID19 directives
  • Works with the EarlyON team to deliver quality programming that enhance child welfare and development and align with the How does Learning Happen Framework.
  • Implements daily program activities to ensure smooth running of the program, including circle time, snacks time, room set up and take down.
  • Works with EarlyON team to uphold quality and safety standards for playgroup programs.
  • May work at the EarlyON centre main location and/or community outreach locations, as needed.
In both Headstart and EarlyON context:
  • Set-up environments that foster healthy physical, cognitive, emotional, social and creative growth and development in children ages 0 – 6 years in a developmentally appropriate way.
  • Models appropriate interactions with parents/caregivers and children by engaging in developmentally appropriate activities;
  • Reports observations and concerns regarding children’s developmental needs to the team for follow-up.
  • Participates in space and toy disinfecting in accordance with Health and Safety guidelines under COVID19, as required.
  • Works respectfully and responsively with children and their families and caregivers.
Professional Experience
  • 3 to 5 years experience working in Early Childhood/playgroup drop-in settings with children ages zero to six years, and/or experience working in a licensed childcare environment.
  • Strong knowledge of child development and behaviour management, consistent with the foundations of Early Childhood Education .
  • Familiarity with the How Does Learning Happen Framework and Childcare and Early Years Act.
  • Understanding of attachment and trauma-informed care
  • Regular access to a vehicle required.
  • Availability to work evenings and occasional weekends if required. (Early-On)
  • Fluency in English is essential; French/English bilingualism is preferred.
  • RECE considered an asset.

  • Cross-cultural awareness and experience working with culturally diverse populations essential.
  • Commitment to the healthy development of children and support of vulnerable families.
  • Understanding of issues relevant to working with low-income (multi-risks) parents/caregivers.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish appropriate relationships with children, families and caregivers.
  • Ability to supervise children and/or engage with children and their families in a manner consistent with the goals and philosophy of the program and the community health centre.
  • Familiarity with the use of computers and/or tablets.
