Job Description

General Posting InformationPOSITION: Health Information SpecialistDEPARTMENT: Health RecordsCONDITIONS: Temporary Full-time for approximately six (6) monthsHOURS: Approximately 75.0 Bi-weekly HoursSHIFTS:Days7.5 hours per shift(subject to change)WAGE RATE:SCALE Minimum MaximumOPSE19 $28.80/hr $33.31/hrRESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review the patient record for the purpose of coding and abstracting information to satisfy CIHI, MOH and hospital requirements
  • Safeguard the confidentiality of all health information in accordance with the ethical and legal requirements of the institution and CIHI guidelines.
  • Respond to written, telephone and in-person requests for the release of health information recorded in the health record in a courteous, systematic, timely, efficient and responsive manner, while ensuring that any medical disclosure safeguards the confidentiality of the records within ethical and legal requirements.
  • Represent the hospital in court cases involving subpoena of health records, utilizing a thorough knowledge of principles of medical jurisprudence and laws governing access to,and disclosure from the health record.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Certification and membership with the Canadian College of Health Information Management Professionals
  • A minimum of 3 years of Health Records experience in ICD10 and CCI coding and abstracting in an electronic environment
  • Thorough knowledge of the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) and the Public Hospital’s Act with respect to Release of Information
  • Have strong interpersonal communication skills, oral and written
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and accuracy
  • Knowledge of MS Word and Excel and automated CPI/ADT
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Ability to work under pressure with deadlines
