The successful candidate is a strong leader who can support a powerful team by providing industry-leading editorial direction on enterprise and breaking political coverage with a focus on government accountability. Working under the oversight of the Bureau Chief and reporting to the National Director of Network Programming, this position will be a key leader helping to support coverage for Global National and the Global News network out of Ottawa.You’ll be working on things like:The following is a paraphrase of the primary functions, but does not outline all of the duties and responsibilities that may be assigned to this position:

  • Work under the direction of the Bureau Chief and alongside the Managing Editor, Global National (Vancouver) and the Ottawa Bureau Manager, coordinate and assign political news coverage to broadcast reporters, photographers, editors, producers, and other Ottawa members of the national news team
  • Build a culture of success by fostering enterprise and investigative journalism in the public interest
  • Oversee all aspects of daily editorial and legal vetting for Ottawa-based content for Global National from start to finish, including editorial direction on assignments and continuing coverage planning
  • Ensure production of reporter content is supported and best-in-class
  • Continue to expand our contacts database to ensure our stories resonate and reflect all Canadians
  • Support editorial gathering needs for Global News’ flagship political affairs program The West Block
  • Build sustainable workflows in the face of relentless news cycles including supporting network requests ie. live reporter assignments
  • Assist with future planning on large Parliamentary news events such as budgets, political conventions, elections etc.
  • Support all management activities at the bureau level including building matters, health & safety, staff schedules, employee engagement
  • Backfill the Bureau Manager and Bureau Chief as required
  • Perform other duties as required
If you have the following…we want to hear from you!The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:
  • A post-secondary diploma, certificate or equivalent, in a journalism or related field
  • A minimum of 5 years experience covering politics with a proven track record of empathetic leadership throughout their career
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written and strong understanding of national and network broadcast workflows and deadlines
  • Team-player, highly organized, self-motivated and creative; a role model who sets high editorial and ethical standards and builds highly engaged teams
  • Ability to work effectively in a high pressure breaking news environment with tight deadlines
  • Management experience in a unionized environment considered an asset
  • French language skills considered an asset
  • This is a management position and the ability to support news teams outside of regular working hours on evenings and weekends will be required
