The Technology Transfer Manager will provide progress reports to Axelys, McGill University Office of Innovation and Partnerships and Research Institute of McGill University Health Centre (RI MUHC). The technology transfer manager works closely with both the RI MUHC management and the Research and innovation teams and has reporting obligations to both the Associate Director, Technology Transfer (Research and Innovation) and the Chief Operations and Development Officer (RI MUHC).The Technology Transfer Manager is responsible for knowledge and technology transfer activities related to Life Sciences/Medical innovations and inventions at the RI-MUHC. He/she provides outstanding service by focusing on innovation, inventions, business development/partnership, and entrepreneurship. The Technology Transfer Manager is also responsible for identifying and evaluating technologies with commercial potential, preparing development and commercialization plans, pursuing protection of intellectual property, designing, drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements and other legal documents. The goal of this position is to foster interaction with the RI-MUHC research community, to promote RI-MUHC research to external stakeholders and to forge long lasting relationships to bring value to the RI-MUHC-generated intellectual property.Primary Responsibilities:

• Serve as primary contact for Axelys to ensure funding opportunities managed by Axelys, their calls for proposal and business intelligence specifics are appropriately disseminated in the RI-MUHC community.
• Assume leadership in the management of inventions arising from research activities at the RI-MUHC, including protection of intellectual property, maturation of the technology, and its valorisation through licensing or spinoff creation in accordance with McGill IP Policy.
• Meet with researchers and others in the RI-MUHC community on a regular basis to provide general information and advice on the commercialization process, inventorship and publication criteria in order to encourage and ensure reporting of inventions and foster their success in a commercial environment.
• Identify technologies with commercial potential. Provide early assessment of an invention #39;s commercial potential and the opportunity to pursue intellectual property protection in collaboration with RI-MUHC Business Development Office.
• Monitor a portfolio of on-going reports of invention, patents, licenses and other commercialization-related activities. Manage the intellectual property protection budget for their files.
• Identify potential licensees for the inventions through networking, database searches, and partnership activities and actively promote the RI-MUHC and their inventions to external stakeholders, including pharmaceutical and biotech companies, venture capital funds, and others.
• Facilitate the creation of spinoffs by researchers, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows by connecting them to mentors, coaches, and other resources available or through Axelys, McGill and the RI-MUHC.
• Actively participate in events, conference and meetings within lifescience sector at national and international level to promote RI-MUHC research, identify potential partners and collaborators and contribute to marketing RI-MUHC as a leading academic player in medical research.
• In collaboration with Business Development Office of the RI-MUHC, contribute to the entrepreneurship knowledge of faculty and students by addressing various topics relevant to spinoffs, such as intellectual property protection, becoming an entrepreneur, financing models, and how to pitch to investors.
• Design, draft, review and negotiate agreements and legal documents, such as inter-institutional agreements, options, and licenses.
• Provide leadership and guidance to researchers on business opportunities with industry such as research collaborations, service contracts, grant support, etc., including budget development.
• Contribute to the commercial information section in specific grant applications in collaboration with Pre-Awards Office of the RI-MUHC.
• Monitor national and international economic developments to assess market potential for both identification of funding sources as well as potential corporate launches and market entry strategies. Remain informed as to developments at other competitor institutions regarding commercialization trends and successes.
• Identify potential industrial partnership opportunities for researchers, including Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that could benefit from the RI-MUHC #39;s research and development capacity and the researchers #39; expertise.
• Monitor progress and results of ongoing projects and licenses using pre-defined KPIs provided by Axelys and RI-MUHC.
• Provide activity and other reports to the RI-MUHC, the Office of Innovation and Partnerships and Axelys as required.
• Attend and participate in meetings, workshops and events organized by the RI-MUHC and Axelys (entirely in French).

Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities

• Knowledge of intellectual property processes, licensing, business development, and entrepreneurship.
• Experience in designing, drafting, reviewing and negotiating agreements and other legal documents.
• Demonstrated ability to conduct business development activities leading to license or contract agreements.
• Ability to access a network of industry contacts.
• A strong understanding of spinoffs is an asset.
• Expertise in life sciences and medicine.
• Excellent communication skills and demonstrated ability to work in team and in matrix system.
• Fully bilingual in English and French, both verbal and written.
• Ability to work within a complex policy and procedure framework.
