Job Description

What is Habitat for HumanityHabitat for Humanity PEI is a non-profit organization working towards an Island where everyone has an opportunity to access safe, quality, and affordable homeownership. With the help of our generous volunteers, the organization has provided 72 families with safe, decent, and affordable housing throughout Prince Edward Island. Habitat for Humanity PEI is one of 50 affiliates of Habitat for Humanity Canada.Construction AssistantThe positions primary location will be in Summerside, PEI, with an office in Charlottetown on 365 Mt. Edward Road. The Construction Assistant will be required to be onsite daily and need a vehicle to get to and from the job site. An orientation to the organization will be provided; this will include policies and procedures to be followed, organization structure, and meeting all staff.Responsibilities

  • Participate in daily safety review with contractors and volunteers
  • Actively communicate with the construction manager, and skilled trades people daily to ensure understanding of each aspect of the build (ie. Framing, electrical, finish carpentry, flooring, etc)
  • Assist with ensuring safety guidelines put into place by Habitat for Humanity PEI are being followed
  • Assist in the monitoring of the construction schedule; suggest amendments to the schedule or ways to get back on schedule – be creative and think outside the box
  • Assist in the co-ordination of pickups and delivery of supplies to site, when required
  • Assist in the maintenance of the construction site which is to be clean and clear of debris, including work site and homes, tool shed, and volunteer trailer
  • Do a complete inventory of tools at the end of each build
  • Take photos daily to send management for uploading them to our website and/or Facebook page
  • Prepare a report outlining best practices, areas of improvement, etc. and provide to Executive Director
  • Participate in an exit interview with the Project Manager and/or the CEO
Employee will:
  • Take daily construction direction and report to the Project Manager, who is the direct supervisor.
  • Participate daily in all aspects of the construction of residential homes and the development of subdivisions (as required).
  • Other duties may be determined and differ from time to time.
  • Attend dedications for each build (dates to be determined)
The ideal candidate will have construction experience and have completed a construction trade course or have life skills suitable for employment as a Construction Assistant.The candidate will possess excellent communication skills and be able to work effectively with minimal supervision. Must be organized and able to schedule/coordinate multiple projects with volunteers and staff. A valid driver’s license and a vehicle are required. The successful candidate will have a current first aid certificate and provide a recent Criminal Record check.Expectations: The Construction Assistant is willing to learn from the Project Manager, skilled volunteers on the job site, and Habitat for Humanity PEI staff. They have varying degrees of knowledge in home construction. With an open-minded approach to working in construction, the candidate will have one year of on-the-job training to learn the skills necessary to work in their chosen career as a construction assistant. Working for Habitat for Humanity PEI will elevate your skills and knowledge of communicating with others professionally and respectfully (i.e., contractors, volunteers, staff, etc.), paying close attention to detail, following direct instructions, and taking action effectively.Job Requirements
  • Able to lift at least 50lbs
  • Will be available to work flexible shifts, including some Saturdays
  • Requires the physical ability stand for prolonged periods. In this position, the individual must stand, stoop, bend, and grasp to complete required duties and tasks
  • Ability to climb a ladder
  • Will perform other duties as directed by the Project Manager
  • Certified in First Aid
  • CSA steel toe work shoe/boot
