Job Description

We value and encourage different perspectives and we have the courage to do the right thing, even when its hard.Responsible for the installation, inspection, adjustment and servicing of natural gas equipment which can include meters (meter set, regulator), piping, appliances and related components of the gas utility system as required. Within the scope of the job, responsible to ensure safety, reliability and efficiency in accordance with company, provincial and municipal codes and procedures. Ensure all work and driving results in a safe condition for the employee, co-workers and the public.This is a training position and a progressionary step to an Operator - Service with the various duties assumed gradually. Progression is attained following successful completion of the company training school program, on the job experience and the successful completion of the government requirements for gas fitter certification.Were looking for someone who cares about their work and strives for more each day.   • Install, construct, inspect, test, and service natural gas equipment as directed.
  • Install vents and flues and connect gas consuming appliances.
  • Respond to customer requests for a variety of service-related work.
  • Operate and maintain regulating, measuring and odorization facilities and equipment.
  • Assist in response to emergency calls and ensure proper emergency procedures are followed.
  • Assist in the investigation of gas leaks or odors, gas fires and explosions.
  • Safely operate a variety of equipment as required.
  • Perform turn ons, turn offs and relights as directed.
  • Assist in the operation of propane and natural gas trailers and filling stations.
  • Install, inspect, test and service gas utility systems as required.
  • Prepare pipe using tools such as pipe cutters, pipe threading machines and pipe vices.
  • May be required to perform testing, calibration and repairs to equipment.
  • Locate underground gas systems and conduct routine surveys of gas mains and distribution lines to detect and locate escaping gas.
  • Perform or assist in the performance of various inspections and/or data collection including but not limited to cathodic protection readings, odorant level tests, regulating stations, charting changing and curb box inspections.
  • Ensure equipment is in good working order and request repairs or replacement where required.
  • Perform quality assurance and inspections on service-related work done by seasonals, other departments and contractors as directed.
  • Promote good working relations with external and internal contacts.
  • Read meters as required.
  • Report encroachments or built overs.
  • Complete and maintain up to date records as required.
  • Identify and document any incidence of gas theft from company and customer facilities.
  • Provide on the job training as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • Grade 12 or G.E.D.
  • Eligible to apprentice as a gas fitter.
  • Understanding of company safety policies, company standards, policies and procedures, and Occupational Health and Safety regulations would be desirable.
  • Familiarity with various regulatory codes governing the natural gas industry would be desirable.
  • Must display good verbal and written communication skills, decision making skills, and strong work ethics, and be able to maintain and promote good working relationships and excellent customer service.
  • Must be able to obtain the appropriate company required certificates and successfully complete the required courses.
  • Must have a valid Alberta Class 5 drivers license and be able to obtain a valid In-House Operators Certificate and may be required to obtain a higher class or certification as needed.
  • Previous experience in meter reading, meter handling, and/or technical trades would be an asset.
  • Must be familiar with the operation and maintenance of breathing apparatus as required.
  • Ability to interpret plans, working drawings and material specification is desirable.
  • Must demonstrate mechanical aptitude and dexterity in the use of tools and equipment.
  • Must meet company stand-by requirements and be available for stand-by when scheduled.
  • May be called out to assist in emergencies on a 24-hour basis.
  • Must participate in the shift schedule as required.
  • This position is a Safety-Sensitive position and has additional pre-employment requirements.
Residency Requirements: Employees must reside within
  • The Provost service territory (agency), and
  • 30 minutes from their place of residence to the Provost office
