Job Description

This position is dependent on funding announcements and may have specific eligibility requirements, including being a Canadian youth (30 & under)The Rossland Museum & Discovery Centre’s mission is to preserve and dynamically present the heritage of Rossland and area. We do this with comprehensive indoor and outdoor displays on the industrial, social, natural, and cultural history of Rossland with a particular emphasis on the mining and skiing histories of the area. We are designated as the “Mining in the Kootenays” historic site – on top of the original Black Bear Mine – with 5 acres of property and 6 exhibition buildings among many other outbuildings/shelters. Additionally, we have an extensive community archive, a provincial visitor information centre, numerous educational community programs in-house and through outreach activities, heritage walking tours, and various special events throughout the year.The Community Engagement Assistant will help coordinate and lead all public programming and community engagement events. They will be responsible for the development, marketing, presentation, and evaluation of ongoing and new public programs and events covering various themes (in history, science, art, etc.), and managing staff and volunteers associated with any of these. The Assistant will work with local schools and other community organizations and members to develop responsive and supportive programs for various audiences (Toddlers, Youth, Teens, Adults, Seniors, etc.) and underrepresented demographics.Current Priorities:

  • Integrate environmental education into permanent displays, including liaising with local environmental groups and organizations for shared use and expertise
  • Support a deeper exploration of our local geology, including the facilitation of a group of experts to support programming, events, and research
  • Explore the creation of a local flora and fauna research and education collection to support ongoing programs, events, and research
  • Explore energy efficiency and green infrastructure opportunities in Phase Two Mine Experience renovations
  • Assist Community Engagement Manager in developing phased Upper Level ecological rehabilitation plan, including invasive species removal
Job Requirements/Qualifications:The following are essential qualifications for the role:
  • Experience planning, organizing, and implementing effective educational programming for children of all ages (majority ages 2.5-12)
  • Experience planning, organizing, and facilitating community events for all audiences
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, public speaking, and customer service skills
  • Conflict resolution and problem-solving experience; well organized and detail-oriented
  • Creativity, enthusiasm, and a love of learning are key elements of this position
  • An interest in Rossland’s natural history and everything the area has to offer locals and visitors alike
  • Experience using Microsoft Office/Google Docs/Pages and Dropbox/Drive or another file sharing program
The following are desired assets for the role:
  • Formal education in education, museums/science centres, environmental/geosciences, or related fields with at least 1-2 years of work experience in these areas
  • Experience in/use of BC Curriculum and lesson plan development
  • Experience working/volunteering for a not for profit organization or registered charity
  • Experience in marketing (through social media and other means) for non-profit organizations
  • First Aid/CPR, WHMIS training, and an RCMP security check

  • FOODSAFE Level 1 by Distance Education
  • Salary/Wage: 17-18/hour
