Job Description

As a global service provider, we continually seek talented individuals.Title: Auxiliary OperatorPosition Type: ContractLocation: Quebec, CanadaReports to: Shift SupervisorStatus: Non-ExemptJob Description:PIC is looking for an experienced Auxiliary Operator. The Auxiliary Operator operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs instrumentation, mechanical and electrical equipment including, but not limited to the biomass boiler, steam turbine, generator, motors, pumps, and other auxiliary equipment for a biomass power plant. The Auxiliary Operator assists in the safe start-up, operation, and shutdown of plant equipment from outside the control room, strictly adhering to all safety and environmental rules and regulations to protect employees and public safety. The Auxiliary Operator works under the direction of Plant Management and Shift Supervisor providing recommendations and input to the staff in the operation of all plant systems and attaining performance goals for the facility.Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensures the proper and safe operation of the equipment and makes appropriate adjustments to maintain operations and avoid penalties in the contract.
  • Complete tracking sheets equipment appropriate to his position.
  • Keep register of operations or change any information relevant to other team members as well as for monitoring equipment.
  • Performs list of preventive maintenance according to the predetermined schedule.
  • Performs maintenance of first responder (minor works).
  • Start-up, operation, and shutdown of equipment, systems, and the plant in accordance with approved plant procedures, technical manuals and as directed by the Control Room Operator.
  • Monitor and record local operating parameters, adjusting as required to maintain safe and efficient operation.
  • Supports the Control Room Operators in the proper operation of the facility with minimal guidance or assistance. Competently operates and maintains all plant equipment. Capable of operating plant equipment locally via PLC panel interfaces. Communicates plant issues and keeps Control Room Operators fully informed of plant operations, unusual conditions, and faulty equipment.
  • Handles corrective maintenance and preventive maintenance work orders in a timely and high-quality manner as assigned.
  • Visually inspects and listens to equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment, or lubrication.
  • Operate water treatment systems in accordance with OEM and plant procedures and monitor water quality to ensure it is within acceptable limits.
  • Monitor plant air and water emissions from outside the control room and take steps to maintain within acceptable limits notifying Control Room Operator of abnormal situations.
  • Observe, report, troubleshoot, and correct situations that are likely to develop into operational problems or safety hazards.
  • Report and respond to chemical spills and leaks in accordance with plant emergency response plans.
  • Obtain thorough turnover from Auxiliary Operator being relieved, including special orders and unusual operating conditions. Review operating logs and inspect plant equipment, controls, and indications.
  • As directed by the Control Room Operator, perform periodic tests on critical plant systems and equipment including lube oil pumps, turbine valves, turbine system trips, and boiler trips.
  • Test and operate plant fire and chemical safety equipment as directed.
  • Maintain work area in a clean, orderly condition.
  • Report all maintenance activities to the Control Room Operator.
  • Participate in scheduled safety meetings and training.
  • Support training of less experienced operators.
  • Safely operate vehicles on-site as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Control Room Operator and Shift Supervisor.
Job Requirements:
  • The Auxiliary Operator is responsible for any adverse environmental condition at the Ministry of the Environment as a result of negligence in the performance of his work.
  • The Auxiliary Operator is a technician who has completed a training or apprentice program and has gained practical skills and experiences and is capable of the proper Operations and Maintenance of the power facility.
  • Mechanical, instrumentation and electrical equipment knowledge is required.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of all facets of power plant operations.
  • Demonstrates the ability to make competent decisions in emergency situations.
  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to read and understand corporate programs, policies, procedures, and instructions specific to the associated Operations & Maintenance Agreement.
  • Knowledge of equipment isolation and tagging procedures.
  • Thorough knowledge of the purpose and proper use of the plant safety equipment.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills to identify, analyze, and recommend solutions.
  • Excellent teamwork skills required.
  • Assist the Team Leader in performing his normal duties effectively or adapted to the needs of the operation.
Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to walk, reach, climb, stoop, and lift (up to 75 pounds).
Education / Experience:
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • Associates Degree (AA) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or a combination of experience and/or education is preferred.
  • Experience in boiler, steam turbine, generator, and Balance of Plant systems start-up, operation, and shutdown from outside the control room.
  • Experience using basic hand tools, performing basic plant maintenance and have the ability to read and interpret plant drawings.
