Job Description

Do you have strong research and statistical skills If so, Science and Research Branch is looking for a person to provide specialized scientific, statistical and technical support to forest productivity and growth and yield modelling projects.The Forest Research and Monitoring Section at the Ontario Forest Research Institute (OFRI) is committed to providing scientific leadership and excellence in forest research, program development, and technology transfer to a range of natural resource clients in Ontario. We work in support of policy development and operational resource management to contribute to the management of Ontarios forest ecosystems. Major emphases include understanding ecosystem processes, patterns and diversity; evaluating disturbance effects and recovery of forest ecosystems; developing alternative silvicultural practices to achieve sustainable forestry objectives; and developing methods and tools to support sustainable resource use decisions. We work in partnership with our clients and in cooperation with other scientific organizations to ensure the effectiveness of our efforts.Note: The successful candidate will have the option of working from the following satellite office locations:

  • 1235 Queen St E, Sault Ste Marie
  • 300 Water St, Peterborough
  • 5520 Hwy 101 E, South Porcupine
  • 421 James St. South Suite 103, Thunder Bay
What can I expect to do in this roleIn this role, you will,:
  • Carry out complex analysis of research data using scientifically sound quantitative methods;
  • Develop statistical, predictive, and mathematical models;
  • Analyze and interpret study results, prepare data summaries, synthesize literature, write reports and assist with manuscripts for publication;
  • Design and maintain databases and file structures for both data and file management.
How do I qualifyTechnical Knowledge:
  • You demonstrate sound theoretical knowledge of applied mathematics, analytical statistics, and modeling.
  • You are familiar with remotely sensed data acquisition and analysis, and of field based environmental data collection and analysis;
  • You have knowledge of the ecology of boreal and temperate terrestrial ecosystems;
  • You have an understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.
Computer Proficiency:
  • You demonstrate advanced skills in computer programming techniques and languages to manage large databases, develop tools and calibrate and adapt models;
  • You have knowledge of geographical information systems, large database management, spreadsheet, word processing, and graphics software.
Statistical and Planning Skills:
  • You are able to conduct analysis and model biological, environmental, and physical processes;
  • You can conduct scientific research;
  • You have experience with data management tools and techniques;
  • You demonstrate excellent organizational and planning skills.
Communication Skills:
  • You have effective oral and written communication skills;.
  • You are able to explain modeling techniques, mathematics, and scientific methods and results to diverse audiences.
