Job Description

Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is one of the largest school divisions in Alberta, serving the educational needs of approximately 17,125 students in 43 schools. This Educational Assistant position will be riding a bus in the afternoons and supporting junior and senior high students with complex emotional and behaviour needs. Non-violent crisis intervention training would be an asset.Our Student Transportation department is located at our Central Office in Sherwood Park.Commencing May 4, 2022Ending June 28, 202215 hours per week (3 hours/day)Open to internal and external applicantsStart and end location will be Salisbury Composite HighKey Duties/ResponsibilitiesUnder the direction of the Director of Student Transportation, this position will be assisting and supervising students that are transported from Sherwood Park to schools in Edmonton and back. Other duties will include:Directing students on and off the bus, supervising conduct while the bus is in motionMaintaining discipline on the school bus; monitoring and assisting students while the bus is in operationLearning and adapting to each student’s special medical and physical needsEvacuating riders in case of an emergencyQualificationsEducation and ExperienceHigh School DiplomaEducational Assistant Certificate or comparable education would be an assetFirst Aid certificate would be an assetNon-Violent Crisis Intervention training would be an assetCourses related to working with students with special needs would also be an assetMinimum of one-year related experienceDemonstrated Skills and CompetenciesStrong oral and listening communication skillsStrong interpersonal skills combined with tact and diplomacyReliability and dependabilityAbility to work effectively as an active team member in cooperation with other team members and studentsAbility to respect and value all individuals with sensitivity to diversityAbility to respond appropriately to challenging behaviours of studentsAbility to effectively utilize crisis intervention strategiesAbility to demonstrate flexibility in work assignmentsWillingness to tend to the personal care needs of students if requiredNote: This position might require lifting and carrying demands that require the ability to bend at the waist, stoop, and twist frequently, the ability to lift between 10 to 50 lbs., the ability to carry, push and pull between 10 to 50 lbs., and the ability to stand, walk and sit frequently.
