Job Description

Job DescriptionAre you a passionate outdoors person looking for a hands-on career Strathcona County has an exciting opportunity based out of the Strathcona Wilderness Centre supporting year-round park operations!Based out of The Strathcona Wilderness Center, this position contributes to the maintenance and improvement of outdoor recreational opportunities for the residents of Strathcona County and other members of the public through the provision of day-to-day operational leadership of a crew and/or the safe operation of complex equipment. In this role, you will train and assign work to crew members, including Labourers and Equipment Operator I positions, make on-site decisions, and perform manual labour as required. Areas in which work is performed include cross country ski trail grooming, trail maintenance, turf grass practices, horticultural and forestry maintenance, weed control, snow clearing, amenity maintenance, etc.Responsibilities

  • Operates self-propelled and small equipment involved in parks operations in a safe and efficient manner to meet established standards (e.g., Pisten Bully, snowmobiles, utility vehicles, up to and including three-ton trucks with trailers, tractors, front end loaders, skid steers, ride-on mowers, self-propelled snow sweepers/blowers, gas-powered and electric hand tools, implements, weed whips, push mowers, chainsaws, generators, chippers, drills, backpack sprayers, etc.)
  • Performs day-to-day monitoring, maintaining, and servicing of equipment to ensure it is in proper working order and meets operating and safety standards
  • Displays accountability when providing responsible leadership to a small crew in the completion of assignments on a day-to-day operational basis while meeting workload and safety requirements
  • Uses knowledge and trains staff members in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment used in park operations and with other related duties required by the department
  • Mentors, trains, and coaches others to contribute to the development of strong and effective teams, supporting staff members to be successful in their roles and gain the knowledge and skills required to advance in their field of expertise
  • Uses knowledge of and trains others in relation to the Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Regulation and Code and follows safety guidelines to keep self and others safe on work sites; identifies potentially hazardous situations and adapts behaviours appropriately according to changing work environment
  • Performs manual tasks required in all park operations, including the use of hand power tools and equipment (e.g., rakes, shovels, screwdrivers, paint brushes, etc.).
Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of OH&S, MSDS, and WHMIS Regulations, First Aid, and CPR
  • Demonstrated ability to safely operate and maintain relevant equipment and tools
  • Demonstrated communication skills to follow oral and written directions, convey instructions to others for the effective and efficient completion of tasks, and interact in a positive manner with internal and external customers
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills to motivate, mentor and develop others
  • Demonstrated understanding of operational procedures, task requirements, organizational structures, relevant sites, and locations relating to parks operations
  • Ability to perform various types of physical labour (moderate to heavy lifting, standing, bending, shoveling) in inclement weather
Qualifications
  • Minimum High School Diploma with 3 years of related experience
  • Demonstrated experience in ski area and/or trail maintenance, landscaping, construction, or forestry is required
  • WHIMIS, or Standard First Aid / CPR-C Certifications are an asset
  • Available to work seasonal shifts including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required
Conditions of Employment
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time.
