The Division prides itself on providing staff and students with the tools to achieve success by offering dynamic programming, up-to-date resources and practical professional learning opportunities.Elk Island Public Schools is recruiting a permanent full-time First Nations, Métis or Inuit (FNMI) Education Advisor with our Support for Students department.Supports for Students (SFS) is located in Sherwood Park and is home to approximately 60 of our EIPS employees.Commencing August 22, 202240 hours per weekEIPS offers a comprehensive benefits package for permanent employeesOpen to internal and external applicantsFUNCTION AND PURPOSEReporting to the Director, Instructional Supports, this position provides support to Elk Island Public Schools students, educators, leaders and families. The primary functions are to provide timely and direct cultural support to self-identified First Nations, Métis or Inuit students and their families, to facilitate a sense of belonging for Indigenous students and their families within the Division, and to promote truth and reconciliation by creating and fostering respectful relationships between Indigenous communities and the Division.This position also ensures the First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education departmentprovides EIPS staff and students with dynamic programming, up-to-date resources, and practical professional learning opportunities.Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:Work with EIPS students and families to support the authentic and appropriate implementation of cultural practices to support the well-being of First Nations, Métis and Inuit studentsDevelop and implement culturally relevant Division-wide programming to support the success and well-being of Indigenous studentsDivision-wide consultation with teachers, counsellors and administrators regarding Indigenous students’ needs and progressWork directly with students identified as First Nations, Métis or Inuit in the school and their communityWork directly with students in care who self-identify as First Nations, Métis or InuitEstablish and deepen relationships with community Elders and knowledge holders to ensure Indigenous teachings remain authentic, appropriate and consistentEffectively utilize ethical and outdoor learning spaces in schools to deepen understanding of foundational knowledge Division-wide, and deepen reciprocal relationships with First Nations, Métis, and Inuit students, families, and communitiesFacilitate Kairos Blanket exercises and the Indigenous Peoples’ Giant Floor Map Division-wideIndependently maintain and deepen effective relationships with community partners for the benefit of all staff and studentsDesign and initiate Division-wide projects, workshops, events and/or celebrations (e., National Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Grade 12 Honouring Celebration, land-based culture camps) to meet the needs of First Nations, Métis and Inuit students and their familiesBuild capacity Division-wide in teaching the historical, social, economic, and political implications of colonization and forced assimilation of Indigenous PeoplesLead schools and central office staff in realizing EIPS’ 4 Year Education Plan as it relates to First Nations, Métis and Inuit educationDevelop and facilitate professional development that helps teachers and leaders to develop and apply foundational knowledge about First Nations, Métis and Inuit for the benefit of all studentsAdvise the Division on culturally respectful protocols when working with Elders and Knowledge Holders, (e., honorariums, gifting)Working with the team, making decisions on the First Nations, Métis and Inuit budget and providing recommendations to the Associate SuperintendentQUALIFICATIONSEducationPost-secondary studies in education, Indigenous studies, sociology, social work, or related fields will be considered an assetExperienceMinimum of 3 years of related experienceExtensive knowledge of the social, cultural, and economic impacts of residential schools and other tools of forced assimilationUnderstanding of and experience with Indigenous cultures, traditions, protocols, ceremonies and practicesRespectful relationships with First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, families, Elders, and communitiesCoordinating and facilitating cultural workshops, events and/or celebrationsAbility to speak an Indigenous language is an assetKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ATTITUDESStrong, independent worker, capable of managing many roles and demandsAbility to build relationships and inspire changeUnderstand First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives and cultures with a belief in strength-based, solution-focused, culturally led approaches to student success and well-beingWork collaboratively with a variety of community and educational stakeholders, including community Elders and Knowledge HoldersEffective cross-cultural, interpersonal skills including flexibility, patience, sensitivity, tolerance, enthusiasm, creativity and imaginationAbility to speak an Indigenous language is an assetWORKING CONDITIONSThe program coordinator works indoors except when facilitating outdoor Learning From the Land programmingThe use of a personal vehicle to access all schools within EIPS is requiredThis position will be housed in the EIPS First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education Centre but will support all schools across the DivisionFor more information, please contact Ryan Marshall, Director, Instructional Supports, at 780-417-8160 or email ryan.marshall@eips.ca .Only online applications will be accepted.Elk Island Public Schools appreciates and considers all applications;
