Haythorne Junior High.F.R. Haythorne Junior High serves approximately 645 students in grades 7 to 9, with 32 teaching staff and 17 support staff. The school is located in Sherwood Park, AB.Character education, citizenship and student leadership are integral to the F.R. Haythorne experience. The library technician must understand the standardized technical procedures that exist in all libraries and must be an information specialist in all forms, including books, periodicals and online resources. The Library Technician will maintain the library/learning commons through team planning and application of standardized library policies and procedures. This individual receives direction from the Teacher-Librarian or Principal.KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIESCirculation ServicesInput and monitor the circulation of library resourcesCompile overdue reports and track overdue materialsContact parents regarding overdue materials, as necessaryCollect money for lost and damaged materialsGenerate statistical reportsShelve books and other materials in a timely fashionFacilitate the ordering and circulation of materials within the schoolRoute periodicals to appropriate teachersAssistance to Students and StaffProvide guidance to students in locating materials both in print and onlineProvide readers advisory service for studentsFacilitate and support individual students and classes doing research in the librarySupervise and assist students with internet usageAssist teachers in locating resources for unit planningOrganize and/or assist with reading promotion activitiesDemonstrate the use of the OPAC for staff and studentsLibrary AutomationUse international cataloguing standards to create electronic records and to modify imported and existing records in the library databaseLocate and import electronic library records using subscription services and/or the InternetManage database of electronic library records through global changes, authority indexes, and individual updatesCreate and modify various reports including statistics, bibliographies, and database maintenance reportsPerform and manage automated library inventoryTechnology and EquipmentAssist students and teachers with the operation of computers (including Internet, email, word processing, spreadsheets, and other applications)Assist students and teachers with the operation of AV and technological equipment (may include computer projectors, photocopier, laminator, etc.)Troubleshoot computer and equipment problems in and adjacent to the libraryWork with Technology Services personnel in the deployment of IT resourcesFollow EIPS repair procedures for AV and technological equipmentMaintenance (dust, clean, replace bulbs, etc.) of AV and technological equipment in and adjacent to the libraryMaintain inventory of AV equipment (model and serial number)Acquisition of MaterialsAssist the Teacher-Librarian or Principal with the library allocated budgetMaintain a consideration file for future purchasesResearch to locate best pricing and availability for various library resourcesPlace library materials and supply ordersAccompany certified staff to book displays and take-away salesTrack, verify and monitor orders for missing items and backordersMonitor and track periodical ordersProcess new materials (organizing, taping, covering, stamping, bar-coding, etc.)Library Maintenance and OrganizationTrain and provide functional school monthly newslettersOther duties as assignedEDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEHigh School DiplomaLibrary Technician Diploma (2 year) or equivalent education (new probationary employees must have or will attain within 5 years of hire date)Minimum of one-year related experienceEquivalencies may be considered.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ATTITUDESKnowledge of general library operations along with a knowledge of various specific routines and practices that are common to all libraries.Knowledge of library automation systems and the ability to learn new systems and software programs, a comprehensive knowledge of MARC, AACR2, Dewey Decimal System, and standardized subject headings.Knowledge of computers in a networked environment.Knowledge of Makerspaces, assisting teachers and students with tools to enhance hands-on education and lifelong learning through experimentation and exploration.Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, Internet and e-mail applications.Good troubleshooting skills and organizational skills.The ability to maintain consistent routines and practices with an attention to detail and accuracy.Good oral and written communication skills including library advocacy.Good interpersonal skills.Ability to take direction as well as be self-motivated and work independently.Personal qualities such as flexibility, patience, sensitivity, tolerance, enthusiasm, creativity and imagination.Ability to work successfully with students, staff, and other educational professionals.Ability to coordinate activities for students and staff which enhance student learning.PHYSICAL
