Job DescriptionThis posting is for 2 hourly positionsThe Outdoor Instructor I will be responsible for supporting the planning and delivering of high-quality outdoor and environmental education programs, camps, and events for the community. Key responsibilities will include participation in training programs for the sharing of information and/or improving skills and knowledge while maintaining a safe environment.ResponsibilitiesSupport the planning, leading, and delivery of high quality outdoor and environmental education programs, camps, and events to the general public, schools, and community groupsWork as a team member to support the development of detailed daily and weekly activities and schedules and support the creative, flexible, and effective planning and delivery of outdoor programs, camps, and eventsParticipate in the implementation of the training matrix by assisting with leading training programs for team members, junior outdoor leadership program participants, and volunteersSupport learning of participants and peer team members by adapting teaching styles and modelling appropriate behaviours to provide a positive environment for lifelong learning. Assist with the assessment of participants and provision of opportunities for individual developmentalSupport the maintenance of a safe environment by participating in regular inspections. Follow the safety and OHS policies, practices, guidelines, and procedures for outdoor programs at program facility and site locationsSupport provision of high quality and a seamless, positive guest experienceGreet and welcome each program participant & Centre guests, ensuring the guest experience is treated with respect and valueProvide daily feedback and communicating any incidents that occurred in the program, event, or camp to a supervisorCommunicate potentially hazardous situations to supervisors to resolve situations in a timely mannerSkills and AbilitiesPositive and professional attitude with strong communication skills working with diverse groups of individuals including participants, parents/guardians, teachers, group leaders, adult participants, and Centre staffAbility to manage critical incidents in an efficient and appropriate mannerEffective planning & project executionAbility to work with minimal supervision and in a constantly changing environmentQualificationsIn the process of obtaining, or have completed post-secondary education in physical education, kinesiology, recreation, tourism, environmental studies, or a related fieldDemonstrate proven and logged experience in outdoor skills, adventure education, and/or environmental education program planning and deliveryMaintain current First Aid/CPR, WHMIS, RCMP records, and Child Welfare checkMaintain program area technical qualification/certifications specific to the seasonal programs delivered. These may include:Year-round: minimum 40-hour Wilderness Advanced First Aid, (WAFA), CPR Level HCPSpring/Fall: Paddle Canada (PC) Waterfront InstructorWinter: CANSI I (Classic only) Instructor and NCCP Community Coaching (cross country skiing)The following certifications are an asset to the position:Year-round: 80-hour Wilderness First Responder (WFR)Spring through Fall: Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Instructor Tandem, Paddle Canada Lake Canoe Instructor Solo; Swift Water Rescue trainingConditions of EmploymentSubmission of Satisfactory Criminal Record CheckSubmission of Satisfactory Vulnerable Sector Check and Child Intervention Record CheckValid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a 5-year Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demeritsShortlisted candidates will be required to provide proof of educational and professional credentials as noted in the resume.This competition may be used to fill future vacancies for similar positions within the next 6 months.Competition #208-2021-EXT-RPC closes June 29, 2021Thank you for your interest in Strathcona County.
