Job Description

Job DescriptionThis posting is for one (1) Seasonal, Full-time position up to 17 weeksSmall Animal Control Specialists (Pest Inspectors) assist in the coordination, planning and delivery of Strathcona County’s Agricultural Pest program to the general public, including private and public land, industry, and commercial operations. The positions are focused on the control of a variety of pests including wildlife.Responsibilities

  • Assist with the control of problem wildlife within the parameters of the Agricultural Pests Act, the Wildlife Act, and Strathcona County’s policies and procedures
  • Initiate the control of small problem mammals on private and public land
  • Assist in surveying for various diseases and pests within the parameters of the Agricultural Pests Act, and Strathcona County’s policies and procedures
  • Educate and provide current information to landowners regarding best management practices and biosecurity options to prevent the spread of diseases and pests
Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of small mammal biology and control techniques
  • Knowledge and familiarity with the Agricultural Pests Act, and Strathcona County’s policies and procedures
  • Effective customer service, public relations and communication skills (verbal and written) to work with diverse groups of individuals and the ability to deal with residents in challenging situations
  • Knowledge of current farming practices and familiarity with farm and industrial equipment is an asset
  • General computer proficiency and the ability to learn department specific software; experience in GIS is an asset
  • The ability to work self-sufficiently in field conditions that include inclement weather and remote rural areas
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in Biological Sciences, Agriculture, or related field with one or more courses in wildlife biology, ecology, or environmental sciences; two years related experience is preferred
  • Current Standard First Aid is an asset
  • A firearms possession license and Firearms Safety Course
Conditions of Employment
  • In accordance with the Employee COVID-19 Vaccination Directive and Procedure, all employees of Strathcona County are required to be fully vaccinated and provide proof of vaccination or will be required to participate in a rapid testing program
  • Submission of Satisfactory Criminal Record Check
  • Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s licence and submission of a Driver’s Abstract with less than 7 demerits
  • Successful passing of a pre-employment drug and alcohol test
  • Ability to perform physical labour as part of the job duties and stand/walk for extended periods of time
