Through the actions of the Values We Live By, accountability, communication, leadership, integrity and respect are encouraged, while maintaining a work, play balance.Position Overview:This position is responsible for performing manual work, operating vehicles and limited equipment in the operations and maintenance tasks assigned in the delivery of programs and services in the Roads section. This position reports to the Supervisor of Roads.Responsibilities:Operations and Maintenance Management:

  • Perform all assigned tasks in operation and maintenance of asphalt roadways, snow and ice control, street sweeping, sidewalks, gravel roadway grading and dust control, piped and open storm drainage systems, traffic control devices, operations yard.
  • Operate vehicles and limited equipment, including tractors and skidsteers (with attachments), asphalt rollers, loaders, snow blowers and single axle trucks, in a safe and skillful manner to complete tasks.
  • Manually dig holes and trenches; install posts; manually shovel and rake asphalt, dirt, gravel, snow and other materials; manually sweep and hose down surfaces; manually sand sidewalks.
  • Perform work independently or on a crew; work is monitored by a supervisor to ensure adherence to safety regulations and meeting established work quality/productivity standards.
  • Work in accordance with Alberta Occupational Health & Safety regulations and City Safe Work Practices and Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Perform daily inspection of utilized vehicles and equipment and report deficiencies.
  • Carry out daily equipment lubrication needs and minor equipment maintenance including washing.
  • Assume the responsibility of team lead and coordinate, schedule assign and direct labour, equipment and labour to accomplish assigned tasks, as required.
  • Perform related duties as assigned in any section of operations.
Stakeholder Relations:
  • Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within area of assignment and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Develop and maintain ongoing working relationship with vendors, contractors and various City departments.

Other:
  • Have an understanding of and adhere to City policies, procedures and standards, whether written or implied, as amended from time to time.
  • Contribute to a positive safety culture by acting in a safe manner at all times and complying with City safety policies for staff and contractors.
  • Provide leadership for Health and Safety by making every reasonable effort to ensure the health and safety of staff within the section.
  • Act as a steward of the Citys Corporate Culture through empowerment and support to staff.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED supplemented by experience in tasks and the operation of equipment assigned to the position or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • A minimum of one year of experience in the tasks and operation of equipment assigned to the position.
  • WHMIS, Equal Potential Grounding, Flag Person, Transportation of Dangerous Goods and First Aid Certification would be an asset.
  • Certification in a team leader or leadership course would be an asset.
  • Possession of a valid Alberta Class 5 Motor Vehicle Operator’s License mandatory (abstract required).
  • Experience in a municipal setting is an asset.
