Manager of Recreation & CultureTemporary Full TimeThe District of Squamish is seeking a temporary full time Manager of Recreation & Culture to work with us over thesummer months and into the fall and possibly longer, assisting our Acting Director of Recreation & Culture with themanagement and operations of the department. A key part of this role will be to provide leadership and supervision todepartment staff, ensuring that high quality programs are delivered with a customer focus approach.What we’re looking for: You have a strong background in recreation and/or arts & culture administration and servicedelivery and you have worked at a supervisory level for at least five years. This position plays a key leadership role within the department in the delivery of high qualitycustomer service, community engagement and effective resources management.KEY RESPONSIBILITIESCustomer Service

  • Contributes to the success of our team and creation of our community, by fostering the District of Squamish

  • Follows the District of Squamish’s Customer Service Guidelines to ensure the Delivery of Outstanding Service.
Recreation and Culture Management
  • Manages the programming operation of the facilities within budgets, policy guidelines and procedures
  • Meets regularly with user groups
  • Prepares preliminary budgets for the review and approval of the Director of Recreation Services
  • Assists the Director of Recreation Services with the development and implementation of strategic plans, policies and
procedures, and enforces policies and procedures as required
  • Maintains records, prepares reports and monitors statistical information
  • Solicits feedback from internal and external customers and employees and acts on the feedback received
  • Approves all facility user groups schedules
  • Works co-operatively with staff in maintaining a clean and safe facility and ensuring effective and efficient program
and maintenance schedulesEmployee Development & Supervision
  • Supervises, reviews and coordinates the day-to-day operations of the Recreation and Culture Department
  • Provides direct supervision for the work of Program Specialists and Customer Service Supervisor and other
employees as required
  • Provides support to staff through training, sharing knowledge and helping trouble shoot challenging situations
  • Involves all team members with open communication and encouragement
  • Supports employees’ growth and development through coaching conversations, employee development reviews
and by ensuring training opportunities are provided and mentoring opportunities exist
  • Drives employee engagement through recognition, team building events and effective communication.
  • Orients new staff.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods required in the administration and operation of
recreation and culture services including programming and operating recreation facilities and full servicerecreational complexes.
  • Ability to plan, organize, schedule and promote recreational activities designed to meet the interests and needs of
the community.
  • Strategic thinker possessing the ability to take a collaborative approach to service delivery.
  • Ability to maintain records and produce reports.
  • Ability to make decisions that reflects the organization’s objectives and goals.
  • Ability to foster collaborative relationships and a positive team environment.
  • Working knowledge of local government risk management principles, practices, procedures and systems.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality
  • Strong and demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to deal with people in a professional manner both
internally and externally.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Advanced computer skills and thorough knowledge of Microsoft Office including MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
REQUIRED TRAINING, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • An original Police Information Check, including Vulnerable Sector Check issued within the past 6 months that is
satisfactory to the employer will be required before starting in the position.
  • Bondable
  • Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License
  • Grade 12
  • Seven years’ progressive experience working in Recreation Administration or a related field including five years’
experience working at a supervisory levelAnd
  • Degree in Recreation Administration, physical education or a related field.
Or
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
